Abstract

Radio and television, broadcasting have been a focal point in the dispensing of information, education, and entertainment in contemporary societies. This paper looks at the various forms of radio and television programmes and their role in audience engagement and communication. The article examines the categories of programmes of broadcast, talk shows, documentaries, entertainment programmes and education-based programmes. It also examines the structural features and purpose of each of the programme types and how they affect scriptwriting, techniques of production and presentation styles. The study, based on a qualitative approach of review one, suggests the importance of programme formats in defining the broadcasting strategies and their effects on the audience. Results show that the different programme forms play different social and communication roles such as informing the citizens, fostering cultural values, encouraging dialogue and entertainment. The paper concludes that programme formats should be understood by broadcasters, scriptwriters, and producers who want to provide effective and involving content.

The various forms of radio and television programmes are critical in determining the knowledge of the masses, entertainment tastes and social consciousness. The format of each programme is created keeping in mind a purpose and intended audience. An example is the news broadcasts that are meant to inform about the current events in a timely manner, and documentaries that are aimed at a deeper look at the real-life issues. The talk shows promote dialogue and involvement of the audience, whereas the entertainment programmes focus on creativity and entertainment.

It is essential to know the format and workings of programme formats to produce in the broadcast industry. Depending on the format under production, broadcasters are required to craft scripts, production styles and styles of presentation very well.
