Community Mobilization

What
is a Community?
A community is a social
group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share
government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.
What
is Mobilization?
To
assemble, prepare, put into operation or co-ordinate a group of people for a

specific purpose.

Community Mobilization?
Community mobilization is the process of engaging communities to
identify community priorities, resources, needs and solutions in such a way as
to promote representative participation in solving a problem in a community.
Steps in Community Mobilization
1.      Establish
a Sense of Urgency:

Identify and discuss crises, potential crises or major opportunities.
2.      Form a
Powerful Guiding Team:
Assemble
a group with enough power to lead the change effort and encourage the group to
work together as a team in achieving the set objectives
3.      Create
a Vision:
Creating a vision helps
direct the change effort and develop strategies to achieve the vision.
4.      Communicate
the Vision:
  Use every vehicle possible to communicate the
vision and strategies and teach new behaviours by the example of the guiding
coalition
5.      Empower
Others to Act on the Vision:
Work
through any obstacles to change,  address
systems/structures that seriously undermine the vision and encourage risk
taking and non-traditional ideas, activities and actions
6.      Plan
for and Create Short-Term Wins:
Set
clear and measurable goals, Identify your celebrations and success markers and
recognize and reward those supporting/actualizing the guiding vision
7.      Consolidate
Improvements and Produce More Change
: Using your increased credibility to promote your
guiding vision, support those who support the vision and reinvigorate the
process with new projects, themes and change agents
8.      Introduce
New Approaches:
  Articulate the connections between new
behaviours and social change and develop the means to ensure leadership
development and sustainability
Objectives
of Community Mobilization

the level of awareness of the people on the need of the community and
developing a problem solving strategy.

develop the intellectual capacity of the participants to and to promote inclusiveness
