According to Bennet
(2011) ophthalmia neonatorum is any purulent discharge from the eyes of an
infant with 21 days of birth or any inflammation that occur in the eye of an
infant within 21 days of birth which is accompanied by a discharge. He also

stated that onset may be as early as the first day bit is likely to be later in
the first
week. This discharge may be watery at first, but becomes red and
later becomes congented and often oedemiatous, the eyes becomes swollen and
tightly shut. He further stated that ophthalmia neonatorum is an inflammation
of the eyes (corneal). The disease starts with watery eyes, irritation and
redness of the eyes and it is followed by some swelling of the lid and pussal
discharge from the eyes.
Warmer (2008) defined
ophthalmia neonatorum as the inflammation of the eyes resulting from infections
during the infant passage through the birth canal. Further, he added that is a
very serious condition which may result to permanent blindness. He later stated
the pathology of ophthalmia neonatorum is an infection due to staphylococci,
pneumocci and homophiles bacteria allergic conjunctivitis may be due to many
allergens, e.g. animal’s dender, pollens, chemicals and drugs.

Ophthalmia neonatorum
is a profuse purulent greenish discharge usually bacteria oedema and redness of
the eyelids occur shortly after birth which is a noticeable and highly
contagious disease.

Adele (2010) referred
to it as gonococci conjunctivitis. He further state that if the mother has
gonorrhoea as at the time of delivery, as the infant is delivered virginally,
he may contact the disease. This occurs on the first day to the fourth day of
life. He later stated that is the eye of the baby becomes infected at the time
of delivery, it is therefore a severe ophthalmia neonatorum. The eyelids and
pre-orbital tissue are inflamed and swollen and orbital cellulites may push the
eye forward, but even so, it is liable to be hidden behind markedly swollen
lids with pus excluding between their edges. Untreated gonococci ophthalmic may
cause irreparable damage to the eye and use to be common cause of blindness. If
a new born baby’s eye gets red and have a lot of pus in them thus is probably
venereal and must be treated at once to prevent baby from going blind. If the
eye infection begins between 1 – 3 weeks after birth, it means the baby picked
up one or more of these eye diseases from the mother at birth. Ophthalmia
neonatorum is an acute inflammation of the eyes in infant as a result of
contaminated during its birth in case where the mother suffers from acute
gonorrhoea. Severe ophthalmia neonatorum and corneal ulceration can result and
lead to blindness.

The presenting sign
is a sign discharge from the eye of a newborn infant irritation of the corneal.
This may however be caused organism other than gonococcus, but in some cases
such as the eyes are taken to establish the causative organism.
