Introduction
Public
or community health is the part of medicine which is concerned with the
prevention of diseases and promotion of health and efficiency of the entire
population through organized community efforts

Social
services are organized governmental and non governmental services that provide
help and advice to the people in different areas of life
Social welfare services provision in Nigeria
Presently,
the three tiers of government (federal state and local) are responsible for the
provision of social services for the society
The
unit should be responsible for the provision of the following services
1.     
Admission of the motherless babies into orphanage
2.     
Arranging programmes for adoption of motherless babies
Objectives of social welfare services
The
major objective of social welfare services is to promote social functioning of
people, groups and communities for meaningful and productive life
Department of environment
The
EHO’s perform the following duties in destitute control
1.     
Referring destitute to psychiatric or teaching hospitals
2.     
Helping to control nuisance and aesthetic insults created by
destitute etc
EHO/Ts
may carry out ancillary and/or secondary functions in public health e.g public
social work, mental health, drug prevention and treatment, medical care of the
poor, maternal child health care, child sexual abuse
The social welfare department
The
social welfare department of the LGA assist the less privileged and destitute.
They also improve the welfare of children. There are two types of social
welfare services
1.     
Residual social welfare services
2.     
Institutional social welfare services
3.     
 
Non – governmental organizations (NGOs)
Many
of them are into official relationship with the delegates to its meetings. They
perform the following functions:
1.     
Assisting the government in rehabilitation
2.     
Setting up research projects
National voluntary organizations (NGOs)
Some
National NGOs in Nigeria are listed below:
1.     
Inner wheel club for window’s assistance
2.     
Nigeria union of teacher (UN)
International
Voluntary Organizations (NGOs)
Many
internal NGOs exist globally, but few shall be itemized

Red cross society

Rotary international etc
Charitable and philanthropic
organizations
Philanthropic
and charitable organizations are set up to help the disabled and poor. The role
of philanthropist includes:
1.     
Providing job opportunities for disabled people
2.     
Giving aids to destitute
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation
means and includes the processes, measures, activities and steps embarked upon
by the government, etc

Nigeria
Agencies
are organizations that organize rehabilitation for the people. Such agencies in
Nigeria are state here under;

Nigeria Immigration service and the Ministry of internal
affairs

National Drugs Enforcement agency (NDLEA)
