Psychosomatic diseases and its relationship between the central nervous system and neuro-endocrine system

Definition of psychosomatic disease
Psychosomatic
means mind (psyche) and body (soma). A psychosomatic disorder is a disease
which involves both mind and body. Some physical diseases are thought to be
particularly prone to be made worse by mental factors such as stress and
anxiety.

Relationship of psychosomatic diseases and the
central nervous system and neuro-endocrine system
Communication
between the brain central nervous system and the endocrine system is bidirectional,
meaning that psychosomatic diseases can cause the brain to trigger the immune
response, and the immune response can induce changes in the central nervous
system (CNS), resulting in a constellation of behaviours described as sickness
syndrome (range of behavioural and physiological changes that help to conserve
metabolic resources during periods of challenge or stress, such as loss of
appetite and consequent weight loss, decreased behavioural activity, loss of
interest in pleasurable activities and enhanced pain sensitivity). Chronic
stress and immune response become mutually maintaining conditions, increasing
the risk of inflammatory, neurodegenerative, and autoimmune diseases. Another
common consequence of immune imbalance caused by psychosomatic disease is
frequently noticed in cases when, because early immune responses shape the
specific immune response to infection, dysregulation of this response may
contribute to the failure to eliminate the pathogen (disease causing factor)
and exacerbation of acute infection.
