Family planning: The diaphragm

What is a diaphragm?
A diaphragm is a dome-shaped rubber cap that covers
the opening of the womb (cervix). It is used along side with spermicide.
How it works
A diaphragm is very effective when inserted six hours
earlier before sexual intercourse and the spermicide that accompanies it kills
any sperm that may likely fertilize the ova (egg).

Advantages of a diaphragm

The cream and jelly act as a lubricant, to easy

Who should not use diaphragm
Woman who:
i.           
Allergically react to rubber or spermicidal
substance
ii.           
Has pelvic infection
iii.           
Cannot correctly insert it
iv.           
Has deliver a baby within 6–12 weeks
v.           
Cannot use it every time she has intercourse
How to use diaphragm
Ø 
Dry and clean the diaphragm before use and check
for any foreign particles to avoid monilial vaginitis
Ø 
Wash your hands before use
Ø 
Check for holes or tears to avoid escape of
spermatozoa
Ø 
Spread the spermicide or jelly inside and around
the rim of the diaphragm
Ø 
Squeeze the side of the rim together and insert
the diaphragm into the vagina
Ø 
If repeat sexual intercourse is encouraged,
leave the diaphragm intact and insert additional spermicide inside the vagina.
Ø 
Diaphragm will always last 6 – 8 hours after
sexual intercourse before it could be removed
Ø 
Within this 6 – 8 hours, do not touch, until it
is removed
Ø 
After this time put your finger under the rim
and draw it out gently
Ø 
Wash and air dry your diaphragm thoroughly after
use.

Follow – up
Client should go for refitting after childbirth or
weight gain which might possible affect the fitting
