The IUD

What is IUD?           
The acronym IUD means intra-uterine device many knows
and call the copper T. either of the two is copper. This device is a small shape
device that fits inside the woman’s womb to prevent pregnancy, it has a shape
like that of English Alphabet – T and is moulded from polyethylene the device
is a coil of time, pure copper wire wrapped around it vertical arm. The most
commonly used in Nigeria is the copper T380A.

How it works?
The present of IUD or copper –T exerts a potent
anti-fertility effect when placed on the womb by a doctor or well trained heath
worker and it prevents implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus.

IUD is 97 – 99% safe

Who should not use IUD or copper – T?
Women who have:
Ø 
Pelvic intention
Ø 
Prolapsed of uterus
Ø 
Severe anomie
Ø 
Pregnancy
Ø 
Retroverted fixed uterus
Ø  Irregular menstruation
Ø  Has many sexual partners
Ø  Has never had a child
Ø  Has sexual transmitted
disease and its likes
How to use it
Ø  The best time for insertion
of copper-T or IUD is the day menstruation stops or shortly thereafter
Ø  But in breast feeding
mother, with amenorrhea (absent of menstruation) insertion can be done by a
medical expert from 6 weeks own-wards after delivery
Ø  In cases of abortion,
copper-T can be inserted 4 – 5 days after abortion or patient wait at the end
of the first menstrual cycle after abortion.
Ø  When Copper-T is placed,
the woman should avoid touching and unnecessary probing into the vagina still
intact after her monthly period by feeling it inside her vagina with clean
fingers.
Ø  When the woman want to
become pregnant, a trained service provider can remove the Copper-T or IUD
Possible side effect
Ø  Vagina discharge for the
first few days.
Ø  Increase and irregular
menses for the first two months
Ø  Slight bleeding between
periods
Ø  Pain or crampling in the
abdomen for the first few days.
Things to report
Report the following acronym – P.A.I.N.S
P – painful period or late period
A – abdominal pain or pain with intercourse
I – infection of any type or foul smell
discharges
N – notice if feverish conditions
S – strings not intact.
Follow – up
Ø  Always return to your
service provider, 6 weeks after insertion for check –up and follow other
check-up appointment date.
Ø  Disclose any abnormal pain
or feeling to your service provider.
