Components of occupational health team

Components of occupational
health team involved any health worker engaged in and are capable of providing
or assisting in the provision of meaningful service in the field of
occupational health and safety. They include:

· Occupational physician

· Occupational health nurses

· Occupational hygienist (toxicologist)

· Ergonomist/safety engineers

· Occupational psychology

· Occupational physiologist

· Health educators

· First aiders

The
role of occupational health team

The occupational health team work
at various capacity to maintain health of workers in the following ways:

i.
Occupational physician: They are trained to cater for the entire field and all
levels of occupational health practices and services.

ii.
Occupational health nurses: Although with a lower level of expertise, they are
much like the physician.

iii.
Occupational hygienist (toxicologist): Their major concern is with the chemical and physical
components of the work environment, their monitoring and control.

iv.
Ergonomist/safety engineers: Their major concern is in the performance and
modification of tools and machines to fit into man’s make up in the work
station. The professionals in this area are usually mechanical engineers.

v.
Occupational psychology: They are mainly concerned with the behavioural,
modification, better individual and group, occupational health and safety
relationships, conditions of services, social services at work, alcoholism,
drug abuse, neurosis, over-weight, food habit modification and exercise fitness
programmes at work.

vi.
Occupational physiologist: They are concerned with the effect of various work
methods on the worker.

vii.
Health educators: They are concerned with the education of workers on
occupational health and safety.

viii.
First aiders: They are
concerned with the treatment of injuries arising at the work before the arrival
of the physicians or nurses.
