Visa information
The British Government is introducing biometric data collection (fingerscans and digital photographs) as part of a world-wide biometric identification process, designed to:
Protect an individual’s identity
Facilitate future entry to the UK
Combat visa fraud and abuse of the UK’s immigration and asylum systems
In May 2007 major changes were made to the application process:
Declaring cash to HM Revenue and Customs
As from 15 June 2007, people travelling directly to or from a country outside the European Union (EU) and carrying 10,000 euros or more (or the equivalent amount in another currency) will be required to declare the cash to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) at the place of their departure from, or arrival in, the United Kingdom.
Cash not only means currency notes and coins but also bankers’ drafts and cheques of any kind, including travellers’ cheques.
Entry requirements
General requirements for undergraduate courses
International foundation year
For admission onto our international foundation year we require:
Five high passes in SSCE (Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination) at Grade B3 and above in relevant subjects
The University of Manchester runs its own foundation programmes for students who wish to study in the areas of Engineering or Science.
For further information on the options available for foundation study, visit:
Foundation year
Bachelors degree
SSSCE or WASSCE plus successful completion of a recognised foundation course as detailed above
Three GCE A Levels or International Baccalaureate
General requirements for postgraduate/research courses
Holders of a good Bachelors (Honours) degree (three years for A-level students / four years for SSCE students), will be considered for entry onto a Masters programme.
In most cases, a class 2.1 degree will be required.
A good Bachelors (Honours) degree and Masters degree holders is generally required for PhD study.
Postgraduate research degrees are individually supervised and we strongly recommend that prospective applicants make initial enquiries with the potential supervisor or school before submitting a formal application.
A research proposal is required along with your formal application.
English language requirements
English Language requirements vary by course and department but are usually the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 – 7.5.
Some departments may accept high scores in SSCE or WASSCE.
Some departments ask that the appropriate score has been met before you apply for a course whilst other departments give conditional offers subject to applicants achieving our general entry requirement level of English language proficiency before starting the course.
Other entry requirements
Please note that this is generic information only. Faculties and Schools have different entry requirements and some qualifications may not be acceptable for certain courses, so it is important to check with the School directly before you apply.
Some courses have additional entry requirements such as previous work experience, submission of written work with the application or previous study of a particular subject.
