Postdoctoral Fellowships at Kyoto University

The
Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University, Japan invites
applications for a two-year CSEAS Post-Doctoral Fellowship under its program
“Japan-ASEAN Platform for Transdisciplinary Studies.” Applicants of all
nationalities are eligible to apply for this fellowship program.
The
postdoctoral fellowship will be for approximately two years, with a starting
date of January 5, 2017. The fellowship is intended to provide an up-and-coming
researcher with the time, space, and financial as well as institutional support
necessary to produce outstanding scholarship that will promote the study of
sustainable humanosphere in Southeast Asia.

The
core components of CSEAS are the Research Divisions of Integrated Area Studies,
Human-Nature Dynamics, Socio-Cultural Dynamics, Economic and Political
Dynamics, and Division of Information and Network for Area Studies. The mission
of each research divisions is to promote Southeast Asian studies mainly based
on natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences, respectively.

Scholarship
Award:
  • The
    fellow will receive a monthly salary of approximately JPY ¥400,000. All
    salary and benefits-in-kind are subjected to taxation, social insurance
    and other deductions in accordance with Japanese law.
  • Financial
    subsidies for travel (one-way economy airfare) and moving expenses for the
    candidate only will be provided to successful applicants.
  • Rental
    subsidies are not included in the salary package. However, CSEAS
    administration staff may offer assistance in securing University housing
    or accommodation in the open housing market.
  • CSEAS
    Admin staff will be able to provide support in acquiring a Japanese
    working visa.

Eligibility:
  • Applications
    in English are invited from candidates of all nationalities.
  • Applicants
    must have fulfilled all requirements for a PhD. from a reputable
    university no more than 3 years prior to the time of application.
    Applicants who are PhD. candidates must have been conferred their doctoral
    degrees by the time of taking up the fellowship.
  • Applicants
    must provide a 1200-word research and publication plan for their time at
    CSEAS. This plan should include dates for publication outputs and possible
    venues for presentation/feedback. It should also include a statement on
    how the proposed research would complement existing CSEAS institutional
    research projects and/or how the proposed research opens up lines of
    collaboration with CSEAS faculty.
  • Applicants
    should indicate the CSEAS research division that is most compatible to
    their research plan. The research divisions are as follows:
    • • Cross-regional
      Studies
      : This division fosters Area Studies approaches through the
      dynamic development of information resources and pioneering study
      resources. The intention of these endeavours is to utilize Area Studies
      approaches in a way that benefits the public sphere through social
      cooperation and practice-oriented initiatives.
    • • Political
      & Economic Coexistence
      : This division studies the political and
      economic dynamics of Southeast Asia in the context of globalization and
      regionalization. The division aims to analyze fundamental transformations
      in the arena of the political development and economy in Southeast Asia
      such as democracy, civil-military relations, political economy, economic
      trends and regionalism.
    • • Social
      Coexistence
      : The members of this division study the co-existence of
      groups and communities across Asia by looking at the changing
      interactions between culture and social dynamics. It explores issues such
      as social, religious, linguistic transformations, the politics of culture
      and knowledge production, the dynamics of family, gender and sexuality,
      in both contemporary and historical contexts. The emphasis is on
      fostering perspectives that challenge the disciplinary and geographic
      boundaries that have shaped the academic study of Southeast Asia and
      beyond.
    • • Environmental
      Coexistence
      : This division explores the co-existence of humans and
      the natural environment, focusing mainly on two areas. One is ecological
      resources, which pursues research on human ecology and environmental
      management systems. The other is life environment, which studies food,
      nutrition, and hygiene in relation to the environment.
    • • Global
      Humanosphere
      : By promoting dynamic comparative studies among more
      than one area of the world, this division engages with critical questions
      relating to issues of human development, global economy and governance,
      environment and natural resource use and peace and security in order to
      cultivate sustainable and peaceful coexistence of human societies in the
      21st century.
  • Applicants
    are strongly encouraged to propose and contact a current CSEAS faculty
    member who can act as a possible academic collaborator for the duration of

  • Applicants
    must indicate the name, affiliation and complete contact details of at
    least 2 academic referees at the time of application.
  • Application

      which ones have been refereed, a full list of teaching experience

      Up to two samples of major publications with full citation record.

      Academic Testamur indicating conferral of PhD. OR a letter from the
      relevant university administration office indicating the status of the
      applicant’s Ph.D. candidacy.
