The main objectives
of LGL-T are to ensure girls’ increased enrollment in educational programs for
girls and increased retention in educational programs for girls in lower
secondary school, and to empower adolescent girls to acquire an education and
skills to become positive agents for change within their communities. To achieve
this, FHI 360 and its partners will implemen
t a gender-transformative school
and community-based approach that engages girls, boys, women and men in
actively examining and changing entrenched, unequal gender norms that harm
individuals and hinder social and economic development. At the same time, LGL-T
will put adolescent girls at the forefront of programming empowering them not
only to stay in school, but also to use their new leadership and other skills
at home, at school and in the broader community. The project will be
implemented in secondary schools in the northern regions of Tanzania including
Mwanza and Tabora.
Responsibilities:
The Education Specialist will provide technical leadership in the area
curriculum oversight and revision as well as directing the design and
implementation of reading curricula and materials to include scripted lessons,
student books and supplementary materials. The incumbent will support the
adaptation of community dialogue curricula. LGL-T team will adapt the SASA!
curriculum to promote dialogue around preventing HIV and gender-based violence,
provide guidance on reading-related materials for teacher training, coaching
and community support, and collaborate closely with education officials, donors
and other stakeholders. Specifically, she/he will:
• Provide technical leadership in design, development, implementation and
evaluation of the education program with a focus on gender sensitive pedagogy,
addressing gender discriminatory roles and activities and references to
traditional gender roles.
• Manage technical staff working on education materials development and
production.
• Oversee improvement of teacher professional development focused on
participatory methodologies and gender sensitive content/communication
techniques and inclusion.
• Support efforts aimed at building community and parent engagement in their
children’s education.
• Provide quality assurance for the implementation of USAID’s Safe Schools
curriculum which addresses prevention of SRGBV in the context of human rights,
gender equality, life skills and healthy relationships.
• Support the organization of and oversee the training of focal teachers,
oversight groups and youth clubs on Violence Free School components including
SRGBV and Codes of Conduct.
• Build collaborative relationships with governmental agencies, donor/client
organizations and other NGOs to enhance quality and effectiveness of the
project curricula and education materials;
• Review, analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of all education related activities
and make recommendations for improvement to meet project goals.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Master’s degree or higher in one of the following fields: education,
curriculum and instruction, gender or related fields.
• Working knowledge of linguistics and instructional design/gender integration
in education projects/gender sensitive teaching methodologies.
• At least 7 years of demonstrated technical expertise, with substantial
developing country experience.
• Experience and expertise in overseeing the design of instructional materials
for large-scale education programs required.
• Experience teaching in secondary schools strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated technical expertise with literacy assessment, teaching and
learning materials.
• At least three years of demonstrated excellence in a management position,
preferably including direct supervision of professional and support staff, and
quality evaluation of staff performance and deliverables is preferred.
• Ability to organize and conduct trainings and technical workshops related to
adolescent education programming is preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. Good
English oral and written communication skills are preferred.
