Primary Purpose and Function:
buildOn is seeking an international development professional with a passion for our mission, excellent communication and leadership skills, and demonstrated success living and working in developing countries.
The Country Director is a 2 year position with the opportunity to renew or relocate to another buildOn country.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Oversee annual budget, methodologies and strategic plan for buildOn in Malawi.
2. Manage, hire, and support local Malawi staff for all buildOn programs (Construction, Adult Education).
3. Focus on specific and measureable fundraising and in-kind targets.
4. Develop strong relationships with current partners and cultivate and secure support for new prospects.
5. Ensure program quality through frequent field visits to buildOn communities (approx.2 days/week).
6. Ensure that buildOn policies and procedures are clearly explained and complied with.
7. Oversee the implementation of buildOn’s Monitoring and Evaluation Methodology.
8. Focus on increasing the buildOn program impact made on HIV/AIDS orphans, women and girls.
9. Host buildOn staff, donors and students from the US through the buildOn Trek for Knowledge and Ambassador Trek programs.
Education/Experience:
– 2+ years experience working and living in a developing country.
– Experience establishing and implementing partnership agreements with NGO’s and government organizations.
– Experience in project management, managing budgets and overseeing program expenditures.
– Experience collecting and analyzing data with a focus on Monitoring and Evaluation.
– Excellent writing, editing, interpersonal and group communication skills.
– Fundraising experience preferred.
– Advanced degree in the fields of International Development, Education or Construction Management preferred.

buildOn has programs in schools in New York, Connecticut, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California. buildOn students in the U.S. have contributed over 700,000 hours of service, working with elders, the homeless and young children in need. 93% of the high school students in the U.S. that buildOn has worked with over the last four years have gone on to college.
Since 1992, buildOn’s School Construction Program has overseen the building of 415 schools in rural communities of developing countries around the world. In addition, buildOn provides adult literacy and community development through its Community Education Program.
In 2011, buildOn is working in Nicaragua, Haiti, Senegal, Mali, Malawi and Nepal and will build 60 primary schools.
