About us: Greener Footprints is a not-for-profit society registered in British Columbia and founded in 2005. Our mission is to reduce waste through targeted activities and campaigns by engaging with individuals, retailers, communities, and governments to provide alternative and creative solutions to reduce their impact on the environment. Our first notable project was a plastic bag reduction initiative at the community level in Rossland, British Columbia. Public awareness building and education campaigns are also part of our work. We are a volunteer-based organization with an active Board of Directors.
Job description: The Project Assistant will work with direct guidance from the Board of Directors to identify a new disposable consumer item to target for waste reduction activities in the community of Squamish. One option is to build on existing research that was recently conducted for Greener Footprints by a UBC geography student on the sustainability of disposable coffee cups.
Duties may include:
• Researching the status of waste generated by the given consumer item in Squamish
• Collecting best practice examples of waste reduction initiatives for that item
• Identifying stakeholders in the local community (including local government and the general public as potential volunteers) and potential community partners
• Identifying and participating in community outreach event(s) in cooperation with the Board and/or a community partner to share the results of the research, for example at a school, seniors centre, or community centre
• Writing a regular blog entry and/or use other social media and online tools to communicate interesting facts along the way
• Conducting telephone, in-person or online interviews
• Identifying potential funders and fundraising activities, and applying for funding
• Submitting an Action Plan and Final Report to the Board
The Project Assistant will be mentored by the co-founder of Greener Footprints and supervised by the Chair. Opportunities can be explored to attend networking events with Board Members from the Sea to Sky and Lower Mainland areas. The position is a home-based position; however, the Project Assistant will be meeting in person at least weekly with either mentor or supervisor, and conducting regular check-ins by phone or Skype.
Who you are: We are open to hiring an individual from any discipline who we feel best fits our needs personality-wise and has potential, as long as they have an interest or passion for community involvement and environment & sustainability issues.
Required:
• self-directed and motivated individual with an interest and passion for environmental issues
• desk, computer, and internet connection with Skype to work from home office
• between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
• have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
• be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
Related Experience:
• Work Experience: 2-4 years
• non-profit or environmental sector experience
• experience in community relations, especially with youth and seniors
• experience in social media and online web maintenance
