Project Canoe is a non-profit charitable organization that uses the
outdoors, including wilderness canoe trips, to create a transformative
environment in which our youth develop life skills, social
competencies, and resiliency, thereby fostering their own personal
success. We partner with our youth by supporting them as they carry
these newly developed skills and successes forward to manage the
complex challenges in their lives. O
ur youth are between the ages of
13 and 18, and face economic, social, behavioural, emotional and/or
systemic barriers in their daily lives. Project Canoe uses a small
ratio staff to youth ratio of 2:4, which allows personal attention and
supervision for youth and helps the youth to engage and create
relationships.
We are looking for competent, patient and highly motivated leaders,
who have the skills and experience to work with our youth population.
Our Program Leaders have excellent judgment, and are compassionate and
committed to helping support our youth, each other and the
organization.
This position is funded by the Service Canada – Canada Summer Jobs
program. Therefore, in order to be eligible for this position,
applicants must meet all of the criteria listed below.
Eligibility Criteria
• Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
• Was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year;
• Intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next
academic year;
• Student in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only),
vocational or technical program;
• Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee
protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee
Protection Act and;
• Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial
territorial legislation and regulations.
Primary Responsibilities
• Team facilitate urban outdoor excursions in Toronto Ontario
• Team facilitate overnight retreats in Northern Ontario
• Complete appropriate documentation, including youth and guardian letters
• Contribute expertise to staff training
• Assist with program equipment maintenance
Minimum Qualifications
• 2+ seasons of experience working with our youth population or 4+
seasons working with youth
• Bronze Cross (NLS preferred)
• Standard First Aid with CPR
• Must be comfortable in a collaborative working environment
• Exemplifies such qualities: social justice and environmental
responsibility, self-awareness, safety awareness, passion for
continuous learning and mentorship
• Experience leading outdoor education programming
• ORKA Canoe and Kayak certification or equivalent experience
Desired Qualifications
• Training or experience working with youth mental illness and/or
complex behaviours
• G Class Licence (F Class Licence preferred)
As part of this position you must complete a satisfactory Criminal
Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS). We will accept
previously completed check acquire not more that 6 months prior to the
start of employment.
Comprehensive training will be provided, including all emergency
procedures and specialized topics such as youth mental health,
behaviour management, bullying, risk management and low impact camping
practices.
