Position Overview:

Shoresh Jewish Environmental Programs was established in 2002 to lead
the Jewish environmental movement in the Greater Toronto Area. Through
educational programs and grassroots initiatives, rooted in Jewish
social and environmental values, Shoresh’s mission is to build a more
connected and ecologically sustainable Jewish community. In 2009,
Shoresh established the Kavanah Garden – an organic educational garden
that model

s Jewish agricultural laws and environmental ethics – as its
flagship programming space. Located at the Lebovic Jewish Community
Campus in Vaughan, the Kavanah Garden features over 100 varieties of
organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, and wildflowers; educational
signage in both Hebrew and English; an outdoor kitchen; a guided
nature trail; and more!

Shoresh hosts a multitude of hands-on, engaging and
environmentally-focused programs and workshops at Shoresh’s Kavanah
Garden as well as various locations across the GTA. We are now hiring
a Jewish Environmental Educator to help meet the growing demand for
Shoresh’s fall educational programs by Toronto’s vibrant Jewish
communities. Working closely with Shoresh’s Director, our Jewish
Environmental Educator will help develop and deliver Shoresh’s
programs, offering community members from diverse backgrounds the
opportunity to explore Jewish identity in real and meaningful ways.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
• Develop and deliver hands-on educational programs for schools,
synagogues, community groups, and community members from diverse
backgrounds at the Kavanah Garden, Baycrest, our community gardens in
Kensington Market and at Bela Farm.
• Organize and implement workshops, special events, and volunteer programs.
• Participate in and supervise garden maintenance and construction projects.
• Some office-based tasks such as curriculum writing, sourcing project
and program materials, writing content for Shoresh Blog and Shoresh’s
newsletter, etc.

Skills Required:

Our ideal candidate is:
• Enthusiastic, eager to learn, motivated, responsible, flexible, and grounded
• Has experience working with children ages 3-12
• Has experience working with volunteers
• Has a strong background in outdoor/environmental education
• Has experience with small-scale organic gardening
• Has experience in Jewish education
• Familiar with Jewish values, teachings, and practices and is open to
the many different ways that community members understand and engage
with questions of Jewish identity
• Has exceptionally strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Committed to developing healthy, balanced, and open working relationships
• Has a reliable form of transportation
• Has current emergency first aid certification
• Able to work flexible hours (Sundays-Fridays)

Compensation:

This position pays $15/hour for 20 hours/week from August 1 – November
2, 2014. The contract term also includes vacation time/pay. The
majority of working hours will be filled at Shoresh’s Kavanah Garden
in Vaughan, though some work will need to be completed at Shoresh’s
office in midtown Toronto (TTC accessible) and at various locations
across the GTA.
