The Riverwood Conservancy is seeking a Stewardship Coordinator to join our
team.
In this four days per week position, the Stewardship Coordinator (SC)
leads The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) Stewardship Program. The SC
develops an annual stewardship plan with the objectives to revitalize,
protect and improve the ecology of Riverwood, a 150-acre urban green
space in central Mississauga along the Credit River.

The SC identifies stewardship activities and events that support the
stewardship plan, including invasive species management, wildlife
habitat revitalization, trail maintenance, erosion control, creek and
pond resources, public education and other improvements. The SC
engages volunteers from the public, organized groups and schools to
perform these activities and coordinates all events to achieve program
goals.
The SC works with the Development Officer and Executive Director on
funding applications and reports to help sustain the Stewardship
Program.
The SC (a) trains and supervises volunteer stewardship leaders for
program support, (b) supervises the summer Stewardship Assistant to
lead secondary students and other youth to perform stewardship
activities, and (c) with other senior staff, oversees university
student interns to perform field research that supports the
stewardship management plan.
The SC supervises the Native Plant Propagation Program, and works with
this program’s volunteer coordinator to engage other volunteers to
establish a bank of native plants for ecological restoration.
The SC is an integral member of the Stewardship Committee. The SC
provides leadership and works with volunteers representing our
partners, the City of Mississauga, Credit Valley Conservation and
University of Toronto Mississauga who help guide the Stewardship
Program and ensure activities align with approved City and CVC natural
areas plans.
The SC evaluates and monitors all stewardship activities to ensure
goals of the stewardship plan are met.
The SC assists TRC’s elementary and secondary school teachers to
integrate stewardship elements into their lesson plans.
The SC contributes to TRC’s comprehensive Stewardship Management Plan
for Riverwood.
Position responsibilities
• evaluate Riverwood natural heritage areas for restorative
stewardship activities as per the Stewardship Management Plan to which
you will contribute;
• lead the Stewardship Committee and plan, identify, communicate and
coordinate stewardship priorities with members from the City and CVC,
ensuring alignment with their goals and strategic plans for Riverwood;
liaise regularly with the City, CVC and UTM;
• support the Development Officer and Executive Director on funding
applications and reports;
• coordinate stewardship activities and develop project and event
work-plans; engage corporate, service and school groups to carry out
these work-plans;
• lead and establish innovative programs that support the stewardship plan
• train volunteer stewardship leaders to support activities; supervise
the summer student to perform stewardship activities; guide university
student interns to perform relevant natural areas field research;
• supervise volunteers and help guide the Native Plant Propagation Program;
• lead and implement the invasive species management plan;
• monitor, evaluate and tabulate components of the Stewardship Program
including plantings and areas in which invasive species management was
carried out;
• maintain all field equipment and GPS units;
• work with TRC teachers to integrate stewardship activities into
lesson plans at the primary and secondary levels;
• prepare reports as needed for staff and the Stewardship Committee; and
• write a column for Samara, the TRC quarterly newsletter.
Qualifications
• minimum of three (3) years demonstrated hands-on experience and
knowledge of environmental stewardship in natural areas;
• knowledge of restoration ecology, invasive plant management,
conservation, forestry or related field;
• experience contributing to and implementing environmental management plans;
• a clear communicator with very strong writing, organizational, time
management and multi-tasking skills;
• analytical ability to drive decision-making and a strong independent
holistic thinker;
• ability to future plan, and to implement processes and work-plans to
achieve overall stewardship program objectives;
• experience in field research and monitoring and use of field
equipment including GPS;
• some experience in native plant propagation;
• experience working with volunteers of diverse backgrounds and abilities;
• strong interpersonal skills with experience working as a team, with
volunteers, committees,public, and independently;
• computer skills, including MS Office and ArcView;
• adherence to working safely; emergency first aid and CPR training is
an asset, training provided if needed;
• valid Police check or the ability to acquire one; and
• driver’s license and vehicle is an asset.
