Estimator / Assistant Production & Project Manager
We are seeking a highly motivated, inspired, progressive, experienced
individual to pursue their career with us. The current opening is for
a dual role, anticipated to be split at approximately 30% Estimator
and 70% Production & Project Manager. The latter may be considered at
an assistant level or at a full managerial level depending on the
experience of the successful candidate.
Start Date: February 2015 or as successful candidate is available
Wage: commensurate with experience
Location: Guelph and surrounds (with occasional travel within 4hrs
drive of Guelph)

ESTIMATOR
Reports to: Sales Manager
Overall Responsibilities:
Estimation – Outside Sales
1. Occasional Site visits – to new qualified prospects to assess
needs, take accurate measurements and record pertinent site
observations to aid in generation of estimates and quotes
2. Quantity takeoffs – accurately transpose spatial data from
blueprints or site measurements/observations into Company’s estimation
software in an accurate, consistent and repeatable manner
3. Assembly costs – select appropriate pricing options for each
building assembly from among Company’s templates and apply correctly
to quantity take offs
4. Qualitative assessments – consult with Project Managers and/or
perform own judgments to apply appropriate variances to standard
building assembly prices to meet ease/difficulty of each task as
compared to norms
5. Proposal writing – with input or direction from Sales Manager,
edit, add or delete components using existing proposal and change
document templates for both prospective new sales and existing
projects
6. Contract preparation – with input or direction from Sales Manager,
prepare and ensure accuracy of all pertinent scope, specification and
pricing documents in pitch for new projects. Present contract proposal
to prospects (small projects only) or provide to Sales Manager to
present (large projects).
7. Handoff – review contract, share obscure details, interpersonal
matters of importance and other information learned in the course of
estimating to the Project Manager and Project Coordinator to ensure
seamless transition of critical information
Estimator – Inside Sales
1. Consult Project Coordinator’s Procurement/Selections Schedule for
each project to respond to Owner’s preferences with quotes acquired in
timely fashion
2. Acquire quotes or estimates – from subcontractors/suppliers based
on Project Coordinator’s selection requests or change documents, OR if
work is to be performed in-house continue to the following steps:
a. Document Interpretation – carefully review Selections or Change
documents prepared by the Project Coordinator in order to correctly
assess the methods and materials on which to estimate costs

blueprints or site measurements/observations into Company’s estimation
software
c. Assembly costs – select appropriate pricing options for each
building assembly from among Company’s templates and apply correctly
to quantity take offs
d. Qualitative assessments – consult with Project Managers and/or
perform own judgments to apply appropriate variances to standard
building assembly prices to meet ease/difficulty of each task as
compared to norms
Input Cost Calculations
1. Maintain and update database of raw material and wage input costs
used to formulate assembly prices
2. Create, update and maintain assembly cost calculation templates
used as baseline values for estimate creation
3. Participate in project performance reviews to create stronger
feedback loops from which to improve Company pricing, procedures and
policies
ASSISTANT PRODUCTION & PROJECT MANAGER
Reports to: Business Manager, Production Manager
Overall Responsibilities:
Project Management Assistance:
1. Respond in timely and communicative manner to Client’s warranty and
service calls
2. Plan warranty work and minor new projects including: activities;
durations; sequences; Company staff, tool and equipment resource
allocations; and timing dependencies
3. Liaise with, coordinate and schedule staff resources as appropriate
4. Select, hire and organize subcontractors and coordinate
client-discussion with same as necessary
5. Select, purchase and organize key major components/materials with
long lead times
6. Monitor, track, and pay expenses to ensure effectiveness of work
and estimates
7. Ensure customer satisfaction
Production Management Assistance:
1. Schedule staff to support on-site project activities based on
weekly requests by project managers and lead hands in order to best
meet project, professional and client goals measured on a company-wide
basis
2. Adjust staffing allotments between weekly scheduling requests in
response to changes due to weather, pace of work or other new
conditions
Specific Skills/Experience:
1. Possess all skills and general of typical dimensioning/sizing
requirements required to perform material take-offs
2. Possess understanding of typical residential project timing,
logistics of complete work on a day-to-day basis
3. Thorough knowledge of the current Ontario Building Code as it
applies to residential low-rise and light-commercial construction
4. Thorough knowledge of residential low-rise residential and
light-commercial construction best practices
5. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
6. Passive House™ design or construction, PMP or similar
certifications are an asset
7. Knowledge of the current Occupational Health & Safety Act as it
pertains to Employers Engaged in Construction is an asset
8. Knowledge of Tarion Warranty construction standards and application
is an asset
Essential Physical Demands:
1. Stoop, bend, squat, kneel and stand repeatedly and frequently and
for sustained periods
2. Climb and climb stairs frequently
Other Requirements:
1. Possess valid Class G driver’s license with insurance
2. Possess a reliable vehicle to get self to prospective and active
jobsites at various locations
3. Have good driving record to permit insurability on company vehicle(s)
4. Possess personal office electronics including desktop or laptop PC
with own high-speed internet access
5. Possess personal tools including but not limited to: work belt with
pouches, hammer, good quality 25’ tape measure, chalk line, good
quality utility knife and blades, carpenters pencils & pens, notepad,
nail puller, flashlight
6. Possess personal safety gear including but not limited to: CSA
approved work boots, CSA approved hard hat, safety glasses, hearing
protection, dust mask/ventilator and suitable gloves that are weather
or task appropriate (eg plastering)
7. Be bondable
Working Conditions:
1. Work varying lengths of day with frequent long days (9+hrs), very
occasional extended weeks (6 or 7 days including through weekends and
holidays) in order to ensure consistency of project work flow.
2. Infrequently but possibly travel, with potential overnight stays,
to jobsites that may be a 3+ hour/300km+ drive from Guelph, generally
not more than twice in a season
3. Tolerate very loud noise levels (ie saw, jack hammer, mortar
mixer), fumes (ie exhaust, adhesives), odors (ie paints, finishes),
airborne particulates (ie mineral wool, cement-lime) and caustic
materials (ie cement-lime).
