The
Nursery Superintendent is responsible for the supervision and day-to-day
operations of the Burford Tree Nursery. Reporting to the Supervisor of Forestry
Operations, the Nursery Superintendent is required to produce trees and shrubs
to meet the needs of the Grand River Conservation Authority’s tree planting
programs.

Specific
Accountabilities
Accountabilities
- Carry
out the propagation and growing of nursery stock, consisting of bare root
seedlings, whips, and saplings, as well as, container grown seedlings, and
potted material; ensuring a quality product at a competitive price. - Follow
established procedures to hire, train, and discipline staff. - Supervise
full time and seasonal staff; prepare work schedules and assign work;
manage employee performance; ensure ongoing compliance with the OHSA and
GRCA policies. - Control
vegetation and deleterious pests following an Integrated Pest Management
approach using the most appropriate cultural, mechanical, and chemical
means. - General
maintenance of equipment, buildings, and other nursery infrastructure. - Keep
accurate and up to date records of nursery operations, e.g. inventory
records, seedbed and seed collection records, chemical usage, etc.). - Liaise
with nurseries and other agencies (e.g. MNRF) to keep up to date with
nursery practices and propagation techniques. - Assist
in budget forecasting and tracking of expenses. - Work
with other departments that have a role in tree planting and restoration,
such as Natural Heritage and Conservation Services, to ensure nursery
stock being produced is meeting the needs of the end users. - Administer
the purchasing of nursery related goods and services, such as, seed
collecting, equipment rentals, soil, fertilizer, chemicals, potting
material, etc.
Technical
Accountabilities
Accountabilities
- Minimum
of a college diploma in horticulture, forestry or a related field with at
least 3-6 years of relevant work experience (at least 2 of which being in
a supervisory role). - Experience
in the use and maintenance of specialized equipment for nursery use. - Working
knowledge of the occupational health and safety act and related
regulations. - MOE
pesticide licence required for chemical purchase and application on
Authority land. - Knowledge
of irrigation equipment and set up. - Excellent
organizational skills with respect to project management, project planning
and time management. - Excellent
communications and interpersonal skills to allow effective communication
with other departments and the general public. - Computer
skills in the use of MS Office and database software. Experience in the
use of GIS software an asset. - Experience
with growing native trees and shrubs from seed. - Strong
knowledge of seed cleaning and seed stratification techniques. - General
knowledge of soils and land management in a nursery or farm setting. - Valid
Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence.
The
annual salary range for this position is Job Grade F $59,049 to $71,836 and
hours of work are 40 per week during the peak season and 35 per week during the
non-peak season.
