Job Description
The Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory (LSLBO) is located in the Lesser Slave
Lake Provincial Park, approximately 20km north of Slave Lake, Alberta. We are
looking for one hard-working, enthusiastic, detail-orientated individual to
assist with our long-term monitoring programs. Daily duties include setting up
the station early each morning, conducting visual migration counts, extracting
birds from mist-nets, assisting with bird banding and data recording,
completing the daily log, and data entry. Additional duties include equipment
upkeep, trail maintenance, and helping with public tours. The successful
candidate will also be assisting with a collaborative research project being
conducted with the University of Manitoba on Canada warblers during the month
of June. This will require helping with the recovery of geolocators on Canada
warblers. Experience working with mist-nets, banding, or handling birds is an
asset, but not required. On site staff accommodation is available at the Bor
eal Centre for Bird Conservation for $295/month.
Requirements
• Excellent identification skills of the birds of northern Alberta by sight and
sound.
• Applicant must be full time student in a post-secondary institution in
2015/2016 and planning on returning again in 2016/2017.
• Accustom to using binoculars.
• Enthusiasm for early mornings.
• Physically capable to work long hours on your feet with lots of walking;
including long days of trekking through rough terrain in heavily forested
areas.
• Work in poor weather conditions and tolerate biting insects.
• Detail-oriented with excellent field data recording and data entry skills.
• Be able to use Microsoft Office as well as familiar with handheld GPS
devices.
• Safety conscience and bear aware.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate prior to commencement.
