Position
Summary:
To lead Pine River Institute (PRI) participants and staff in the backcountry
during the Outdoor Leadership Experience (OLE).

OLE is offered in collaboration with PRI and includes up to 8 participants in
backcountry for 6-8 weeks as the first step in their addictions treatment
process with PRI. Youth Challenge Instructors spend one week in the field at a
time and lead expeditionary-style canoeing, backpacking, and snowshoeing.

Duties
and Responsibilities:

- Works
very closely with PRI staff to coordinate the ongoing successful execution
of the OLE and to understand each resident’s potential, challenges and
addiction - Together
with PRI, jointly responsible for the health and well-being of students
while on program - Teach
and train PRI participants and field staff how travel comfortably, safely
and effectively in the wilderness in all seasons while canoeing,
backpacking, and snowshoeing - Ensures
students are briefed as to participation expectations and safety
requirements - Effectively
utilize group and risk management skills, maturity and role modeling in
line with the values of OBC to create a safe and supportive environment
for student-centered learning - Provides
on-call service, manages or executes evacuations and other field responses - Facilitate
positive peer interactions among students - Manage
in-field risk management decisions - Present
clear and effective lessons to engage students in learning - Utilize
different methods and styles of teaching - Work
effectively with different populations - Achieves
the objectives of the Outward Bound Canada National Safety Policy - Actively
support PRI field staff in the management of challenging individual and
group behaviours
Skills

- Commitment
to the growth and development of others on an individual, group and
societal level, compassion for people and for the health of the
environment - Understanding
and application of Outward Bound Canada methods and philosophy - Proficient
in behaviour management, crisis intervention and problem solving - Experience
on extended wilderness tripping program delivery in a leadership role - Ability
to be a significant contributor to several small teams - Experience
in maintaining a positive staff team and environment - Well
practiced in communicating effectively with a high level of
professionalism - Technical
and interpersonal excellence - Ability
to establish effective rapport with staff and students - Ability
to instruct canoe tripping, backpacking, snowshoeing, wilderness travel
and campcraft skills and assess associated risks - Comfort
in working with youth with difficult life stories
CERTIFICATIONS:
- F-Class
(or equivalent) Driver’s License - Wilderness
First Responder - Bronze
Cross or NLS - CPR-C
- Prevention
and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (PMAB) (course often available
through PRI as part of training) - Post
Secondary education in outdoor education, adventure therapy, or relevant
field. - Whitewater
Rescue Technician (an asset) - Moving
Water Paddling Certification (an asset) - Position
requires police background check including Vulnerable Sector Check
