Environmental Emergency Response Officer

Smithers, Williams Lake, Kamloops, Cranbrook, Pentincton, Golden, Nelson,
Revelstoke, Surrey, Squamish, Chilliwack, North Vancouver, Hope, Victoria,
Nanaimo, Campbell River, or Comox
The Environmental Emergency Program’s goal is provide exemplary environmental
emergency management through leadership, organization, team work and shared
responsibility. The Environmental Emergency Program leads the Province’s
ongoing commitment to prevent, prepare for, mitigate, and respond to spills
that effect the environment. The program plays an essential role in protecting
both human health and the environmental quality of the province’s water, land,
and air resources along with the flora and fauna they contain.
As one of our newest Environmental Emergency Response Officers, you will be
responsible for protecting the environment and the public by effectively managing
hazardous material and other types of spill responses. You will be required to
administer the Environmental Management Act, Spill Reporting Regulation and
Cost Recovery Regulation and be able to assess highly variable situations, make
immediate on-site decisions, and capably evaluate the incident and nature of
the spill to determine hazards present, environmental impacts and public health
risks.
Qualification for this role include: Degree in the natural resource field
(including chemistry, biology, earth sciences, environmental engineering,
environmental protection) and / or emergency management /spill response plus 2
years related experience; OR Diploma, or equivalent in the natural resource
field (including chemistry, biology, earth sciences, environmental engineering,
environmental protection) and / or emergency management /spill response plus 3
years related experience; OR Grade 12 (with core grade 11/12 courses in the
science and applied science focus areas i.e. physics 11/12, biology 11/12, chemistry
11/12, geology/earth science 11/12, resource sciences or science and technology
11/12) plus a combination of 5 years related experience in the natural resource
and / or emergency management /spill response fields such as on the job
training within industry, government or other.
