Prevention of leprosy

Arthur
(2006) reviewed that because leprosy can be cured with medicines, can early
diagnosis will often help to reduce leprosy symptoms and complications.
Therefore, while prevention is not always possible especially where leprosy is
endemic, control should be possible.

Watson
(1986) implied that for prevention of leprosy to be possible, following
criteria’s have to be put in place, people who live in the same household with
a person with leprosy (household contacts) will need to be examined by a
physician. These examinations should be repeated annually for five years. He
explained further that it is important to note that the degree of natural
immunity is high and there is often no need for preventive medicine.
However,
Hugh (1986) commented that if one has a household contact and yon develop skin
rash, one should have a skin biopsy to determine whether or not leprosy is
present. He further explained that although there is currently no vaccine
available for the prevention of leprosy, researchers are actively working on
developing one.
Haiboss
(2002) wrote that leprosy is a chronic infectious disease and also a
communicable disease. Many of the patients with leprosy are having infections
(bacciliferous) type of the disease this is the main source of infection. He
further suggested that segregation of leprosy patients voluntarily or forcibly
is one of the steps in the control of the disease but this is a great task and
often leads to concealment of the disease people with obvious deformities get
segregated rather than the really infected ones.
Manila
(2010), curtailed that the disease although considered chronic is curable but
early diagnosis is important undergoing skin tests, skin lesion biopsy and skin
scraping examination for acid fast bacteria will help prevent the disease. He
stated further that the key elements in leprosy prevention include the
following:
v    Living
in a clear environment
v    Daily
practice of personal hygiene
v    Proper
nutrition
v    Regular
exercises
v    Avoiding
contact with untreated leprosy affected person.
Iloilo
news (2006) read that the department of health recommends the following for
effective prevention of leprosy infection.
v    Immediate
treatment of infected patients.
v    Good
and adequate nutrition
v    Healthful
living
v    Enough
rest and exercises
v    A
