Disinfection of wells

(Materials)
1.     
Bucket.
2.     
Chloride
of lime.
3.     
Pebbles.
4.     
Silt
or fine sand and
5.     
Anchor
rope.

The most sanitary method of
disinfecting a well is the use of pot chlorination. To carry out this method,
the following steps must be taken.
           
i.        
Perforate
a bucket throughout the lower end to the bottom.
         
ii.        
Rinse
or wash the lining of well with chloride of lime solution.
        
iii.        
Fill
the bottom of the bucket with pebbles or fine gravel.
      
iv.        
Measure
three handful of fine silt and pour it on the pebbles in the bucket.
        
v.        
Put
the appropriate measurement of chloride of lime chemical on top of the soil
(50g of chloride of lime in 1000 liters of water).
      
vi.        
Cover
the chemical with another layer of fine soil and anchor it inside the well in
such a way as to allow the lower end and bottom of the bucket to be halfly
submerged in water.
     
vii.        
Cover
and lock well for not less than 48 hours to allow for total disinfection of the
well.
   
viii.        
Open
the well after the time expiration and pull out the bucket.
       
ix.        
Pour
our/bury the remnant soil and gravels sanitary.
        
x.        
Repeat
the process once in every in 6 months if the site is porous to pollution and
once in a year for a well located on an impervious soil.
