We are looking for a highly motivated, technically oriented individual
with broad-based training and knowledge of scientific field studies to
implement our programs monitoring and investigating the health of the
Great Lakes and interconnecting channels.
What can I expect to do in this role?
You will:
• plan, organize and conduct environmental field surveys on board survey
vessels
• communicate effectively with scientists, laboratory and field
personnel and provide technical advice and recommendations in the
development of detailed study plans with respect to a wide range of
equipment, sensors and electronic systems
• assist in the installation, operation and maintenance of sampling
equipment and data acquisition systems
• prepare comprehensive field reports
• assist in training and supervision of seasonal field
technicians/co-op students
• assist in the procurement, design and construction of new techniques
and instrumentation in collaboration
• coordinate maintenance of the electronic monitoring instrumentation,
sampling equipment, survey vessels, supporting vehicles and ensure
good mechanical condition and operation
• operate ministry survey vessels in accordance with all health and
safety and Transport Canada regulations
• serve as a Provincial Officer in conducting investigations into
hazardous contaminant events as requested

How do I qualify?
Mandatory:
• you have a valid Ontario Driver’s licence
Additional on-the-job Mandatory Training/Certification:
You have:
• the ability to acquire the Restricted Marine Radio Operators Licence
• the ability to obtain designation as a Provincial Officer
• the ability to obtain self-rescue training (Working Near Water/Ice)
• the ability to acquire a license used to operate vehicles for towing
and transportation of boats (Class A-Z driver’s licence)
• the ability to acquire a license to operate ministry survey vessels
meeting all Transport Canada requirements
• the ability to obtain Toronto Harbour Operators licence
• the ability to obtain Vessel Master certification
Environmental and Technical Knowledge:
• you know how to operate, maintain and calibrate a wide range of
water quality monitoring equipment/instrumentation, navigation
instruments and onboard computer systems
• you understand Global Positioning Systems (GPS), computerized data
acquisition systems and have the ability to operate radar and depth
sounding equipment onboard a survey vessel
• you understand water sampling quality assurance and control (QA/QC)
practices and can interpret and report field data
• you can interpret and apply environmental legislation (e.g.
Environmental Assessment Act, Ontario Water Resources Act,
Environmental Protection Act) and related regulations, policies and
standards relevant to your role as a Provincial Officer
• you have knowledge of safety procedures in operating vessels and
relevant health and safety regulations and procedures
• you are familiar with Great Lakes near shore environments such as
harbours and embayments, water currents and weather patterns and you
have experience applying boating restrictions and rules
Planning, Analytical and Communication Skills:
• you can apply planning and coordination methods to ensure water
monitoring equipment readiness and servicing operations to respond to
emergencies
• you have technical, analytical and evaluative skills to ensure
equipment is technologically sound and properly calibrated
• you can assess equipment performance and solve problems by making
adjustments and modifications as required
• you can communicate in a clear and logical manner, both orally and
in writing to develop operational instructions and train staff as well
as to deal with local agencies, public and the media
Salary range: $1,321.19 — $1,624.55 per week
