SUSTAINABILITY at Yasodhara Ashram
Living with awareness in both the inner and outer worlds, the Ashram is deeply committed to participating in positive solutions to a growing environmental crisis that asks us to reduce our carbon footprint.
A Comprehensive Approach: With a goal to be carbon-neutral by its 50th anniversary (2013), the Ashram has developed a comprehensive program of sustainability that matured in 2007- 2008. This program embraces menu planning, food ordering, housekeeping, solar and geothermal heating systems, and carbon offsets for guest travel.
Success: As a result of these practices, in 2007 and 2008, the Ashram saved more than 155,000 kWh, enough energy to power 10 homes for a year. In October 2008, the Ashram was awarded the FortisBC PowerSense Conservation Excellence Award for its commitment to reduce energy consumption by adapting innovative and efficient technologies and solutions”.
The Ashram has become an example of how positive changes can be made, even within the financial constraints typical of a not-for-profit entity.
