Location: Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario
Field Technician: Freshwater Turtle Co
Remuneration: $2000/month. Approx. 40 hours per week (typically Monday –
Friday, but with occasional weekends). Hours will change according to project
needs and can be longer during nesting season and shorter at other times.)
A shared camping site will be provided, or you can choose to find
accommodations in the area at your own expense.
Dates: May 1 – October 31, 2016.
Description: The Field Technician will assist with all aspects of the turtle
project. Duties vary through the season, and include:
• mark-recapture surveys, marking turtles with shell notching and PIT tags
• data collection and data entry (Microsoft Excel)
• nesting site surveys
• monitoring incubating nests
• care, marking and release of hatchling turtles
• public outreach
Required qualifications
• Recent university graduate in a relevant environmental/biology field.
• Excellent data collection skills.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to ask for
clarification if needed.
• Ability to follow directions, and to follow project protocols after on-site
training.
• Ability to complete set tasks independently and to work well as part of a
small team.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions and to work long hours to suit
project needs.
• Strong interest in conservation biology and Ontario wildlife; comfortable
handling turtles.
• Access to a vehicle strongly preferred, as the site is not accessible by
public transit.
• Willingness to comply with health and safety regulations and animal care
protocols.
• Previous experience with Ontario reptiles is an asset, but is not required.
