Water pollution is the presence of some
inorganic, organic, biological, archeological or physical foreign substance in
water that tends to degrade its quality.

water that tends to degrade its quality.
Water pollution is referred as the
addition to water of deleterious matter or substances in such quantities as to
render it non-portable and unsuitable for its intended or designated use.

Sources of water pollution
i.
Sewage
and domestic waste: water get contaminated or polluted from sewage treatment
plant, septic tank and fertilizer industries that discharge their waste water
into water body.
ii.
Agricultural
activities: plant nutrients, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers,
farm wastes, manure slurry, sediments, plant and animal debris and eroded soil
containing mostly the inorganic materials are reported to cause heavy pollution
to waste sources. In modern agricultural practices, NPK fertilizers containing
nitrate and phosphate are added to the soil some of these are wash off through
rain fall, irrigation and drainage into water bodies, where they severely
disturb the aquatic ecosystem.
iii.
Transportation:
automobile waste and maritime waste causes water pollution, accidental oil
spills, leakage from tanks, oil from breakdown of heavy machineries, cleaning
of fuel tanks, oil from cleaning of out-board and in-board engines, solid and
waste water discharge by boats, canoes and ships.
Automobile transportation releases
pollutant into the atmosphere, airborne pollutants can be deposited on land or
water. This type of deposition can take place, some times at great distance
from its original sources. The deposition itself can take several forms; wet
deposition occurs when air pollutants falls with rain, snow or fog.dry
deposition takes place as dry particle or gases. These pollutants can fall
directly on water or having fallen on land
