The African
Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is an innovative, pan-African centre
for post-graduate training, research and outreach which has achieved global
recognition since opening its first centre in South Africa in 2003. AIMS
centres offer a number of educational programs including a one-year taught Masters
and MPhil and PhD degrees by research. Each AIMS centre provides an intensive
and broad education to over 50 African students each year and prepares them for

of the first AIMS centre, the AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI, www.nexteinstein.org)
was launched with the mission of enabling Africa’s brightest students to
flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of
propelling Africa’s future scientific, educational and economic

Information
Technology (IT) Manager

The Centre’s IT
infrastructure provides a powerful foundation to the 24-hour learning environment
which underpins the AIMS academic model. In this start up role, you will ensure
a fully operational platform with both proactive and responsive service to
students and staff members alike to enable optimal performance.

Within the existing
AIMS-NEI IT framework, you will plan for, install and manage the Centre’s IT
system for a growing user base of students, staff and visiting professionals to
include and not limited to: computer procurement and installation, network
administration, Internet access and security, telephone services, sourcing and
managing the use of licensed and open-source software and other electronic
functions to be specified from time to time.

In addition, you
will collaborate with academic partners, in Tanzania and internationally, to
develop and share best practices to enhance and leverage the AIMS-NEI IT
platform, manage and monitor the IT budget, bringing forward
opportunities/recommendations to inform management decisions, and with
designated network colleagues, develop and maintain the Centre’s web site.

This is a 3 year,
full-time contract opportunity and will be based from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Do you have
what we need?

  • Bachelor’s
    degree in computer science/engineering or related discipline
  • Extensive
    experience of the Linux applications and development environment
  • Minimum
    3 years in a similar position
  • Relevant
    IT experience including good knowledge of desktop applications (Microsoft
    Office Suite), networking (LAN/WAN) and internet applications/tools
    (Dropbox, Skype, Gmail, etc.)
  • Systems
    security administration experience
  • Strong
    systems, network and application design background
  • Excellent
    interpersonal and communication skills with an innate ability to simplify
    complex information
  • Logical
    analytical skills with an ability to think and problem solve independently
  • Flexible
    to adapt to an evolving environment
  • Working
    knowledge of Swahili is essential
  • Experience
    working with an international NGO, an asset
