The
African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is an innovative,
pan-African centre for post-graduate training, research and outreach which has
achieved global recognition since opening its first centre in South Africa in
2003. AIMS centres offer a number of educational programs including a one-year
taught Masters and MPhil and PhD degrees by research. Each AIMS centre provides
an intensive and broad education to over 50 African students each year and
prepares them for leadership careers in academia, governance and industry. The
AIMS educational program relies on top international lecturers who teach in a
24-hour learning environment.

Chief
Operating Officer/Deputy Rector Admin & Operations
In
this start-up role, you will spearhead the management of the non-academic
aspects of the Centre – an international setting that conducts teaching,
research and outreach of mathematical sciences. Leading a diverse team of 4-8
professionals, you will embrace the challenge to create a world-class learning
environment using an established model with the flexibility to adapt to local
needs and the opportunity to innovate new approaches. You will oversee the
launch of a defined curriculum and give guidance to the Centre’s growth in the
coming years to implement other initiatives including Research and
Outreach/Teacher Training.
You
are known for your ability to establish, nurture and maintain fruitful
relationships and in particular with key funding sources (governments and
institutions), while accepting accountability to effectively manage and
leverage funds grounded in an effective governance structure, regulatory
requirements and appropriate financial and administrative policies and
practices.
You
will be an exemplary model to foster a culture of excellence and transparency
develop among a community of students, tutors, staff and visiting lecturerers,
all working towards a common goal.
This
is a 3 year, full-time contract opportunity and will be based from Dar es
Salaam, Tanzania.
Do
you have what we need?
  • Master’s
    Degree in Business or Public Administration, Social Sciences, Development
    Studies or Educational Leadership; a Doctorate Degree, an asset
  • 7-10
    years of experience in managing medium to large international settings,
    ideally as part of a global network
  • Experience
    and understanding of the requirements for using and working with
    international donor funding e.g. DFID, IDRC, USAID etc.
  • A
    proven record of developing and professionalizing start-up organizations
  • Experience
    working in international environments
  • A
    consummate diplomate with the drive to innovate and lead change with a
    collaborative spirit
  • Superb
    relationship management skills to lead, manage and interact with a diverse
    team of professionals
  • An
    influential communicator with strong verbal, writing and presentation
    skills
  • Functionally
    Bilingual (English-Swahili)
  • Working
    knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and
    Internet applications (Dropbox, Skype, Gmail, etc.)
    • Ability
      to speak French, an asset
    • Willing
      and able to travel (25-30%) within and outside of Africa
