Job Description:
The University of Liberia invites applications for the position of University Librarian/ Dean of University Libraries. This is a position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with a five year renewable
contract. Tenure may be obtained through evaluation of the credentials of the successful candidate, initiated through the evaluation and recommendation by the appropriate academic Department and College

Duties And Responsibilities:
The University of Liberia seeks an innovative leader with breadth and depth of experience in academic libraries and a clear vision for the University Libraries in the creation, preservation, and delivery of scholarly information to students, staff, faculty and the public, in our rapidly evolving, technologically driven environment.

The University of Liberia, located in Montserrado and Grand Cape Mount counties, is the second oldest degree-granting institution of higher education in West Africa. Established in 1862 as Liberia College, the school became a University in 1951. The University has trained leaders of state, church, industry, and commerce for Liberia and other African countries, providing higher education for many Africans for whom such education was unavailable during pre-colonial times and continuing thereafter. The University is located over four campuses-the Capitol Hill Campus and the Medical Campus in Monrovia, the Fendall Campus in the Careysburg area, and the David A. Straz – Sinje Campus in Sinje, Grand Cape Mount County.

Educational programs are delivered through the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (Liberia College), College of Business and Public Administration, William R. Tolbert, Jr. College of Agriculture and Forestry, T.J.R Faulkner College of Science and Technology, the College of General Studies, three professional schools: the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, the School of Pharmacy, and the A.M. Dogliotti School of Medicine, and Graduate Programs in Regional Science, Business Administration, Public Administration, Educational Administration and Supervision, International Relations, and Conflict Resolution. Current enrollment is about 25,000 students; and the language of instruction is English.

While the University has been challenged in the recent past by civil unrest in the country, it is committed to restoring its facilities and programs to the highest level of academic excellence. The new University Librarian/Dean of Libraries will provide a key leadership role within the university in building an effective library system across the campuses to advance the university’s educational and research programs to prominence.

These will include specialty libraries such as law, engineering, agriculture, medical, graduate, undergraduate, as well as a general library that will serve as a repository of important historical and current documents for research purposes by the public.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and respect for pedagogy, research, and scholarship; a demonstrated ability to create a climate of cooperation and trust among constituencies; and an ability to adapt to technological and cultural changes in our expectations for how best to access information efficiently. The University Librarian/Dean of Libraries will lead a managerial team of librarians and professional staff in creating a high performing, innovative and customer responsive workplace, and will foster sustaining relationships with potential donors and funding agencies. The University Librarian/Dean of Libraries sits on the Council of Deans, Academic Coordinating Committee, Faculty Senate and Administrative Council and reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

Job Requirement:
” MLS from an accredited library school
” Second masters or doctoral degree preferred; 8 or more years experience in a research or university library including 4 or more years of administrative experience
” Demonstrated record of strong, visionary leadership and fiscal management
” Evidence of ability to be an executive in a complex and diverse organization
” Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff of diverse background, styles, and interests
