Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is
the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental
issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the
development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment
under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and
the international community for action.
The UNEP – en.lighten Initiative internship is for
6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 – 40 hours)
under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which
they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the
individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship
period.
Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager
for the Global Market Transformation for Efficient Lighting Project (the
en.lighten initiative), the intern will support en.lighten activities at the
global and country level, including:
1. Desk research and support as required to manage
and apply energy efficiency modeling tools
2. Support to communication activities (e.g.
website content support, drafting presentations, writing meeting minutes)
3. Activities required to organize the Global
Efficient Lighting Forum, such as:
Managing a database of invitees with +200 entries
Keeping track of RSVPs, as well as questions from
invitees and speakers regarding logistics
Create presentation guidelines for speakers
Arrange conference calls with Advisory Group and
take minutes of meetings
Support logistics activities as needed (e.g.
sorting out and arranging badges, awards, giveaways, USBs, etc.)
Support communication activities as needed (e.g.
web research)
Prepare materials for regional consultations (e.g.
power point presentations, background research about each region, etc.)

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one
of the following requirements:
be enrolled in:
a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme
(second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a
first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if
selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software
applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of
the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully
interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which
include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions
and views.
Studies Masters Degree in Energy related field,
Environmental Sciences, International Law, International Relations, Natural
Sciences, Political Science, Human Resources and/or Public Administration, or
Event Management.
Verifiable experience with Microsoft Excel and
Microsoft Access:
  • able to manage an excel database of +200
    entries, and able to import/export data between Excel and Access
  • able to conduct data analysis using filters,
    search functions, import/export sheets into books, and data preparation to
    mail merge using Microsoft Word.
  • Capable of quickly studying and understanding
    the functions and equations of energy efficient lighting models (excel
    based), and capable of producing reports
Verifiable experience with Microsoft Power Point
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional
work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the
United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written
English is required. Knowledge in Spanish and French is desirable.
