Background
The
Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) is the main advocate for
accelerated, comprehensive and coordinated country and global action on HIV and
AIDS. It was formed as a secretariat of 11 UN agencies to ensure an effective
system-wide multi-sectoral response to HIV and AIDS.
The
mission of UNAIDS is to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response to
HIV and AIDS that includes preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and
support to those already living with the virus, reducing the vulnerability of
individuals and communities to HIV and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.
In
its new global strategy (2011-2016) and as enshrined in the new Strategic
Development Goals, UNAIDS is working with partners in Government and a cross
section of Civil Society and private sector partners, to achieve the end of
AIDS by 2030, in which AIDS is no longer a public health threat.
This
goal can only be achieved with mutual responsibility and global solidarity.
Scope
of Work
Under
the direct supervision of UNAIDS Country Director and as a member of the UN
Team on AIDS the national UN Volunteer specifically focuses on catalyzing and
increasing effective community mobilization, advocacy and demand creation
across social movements and reinforcement of community capacities to become
service providers, partners in policy development, and watchdogs for rights,
programming and transparency of funding flows. Critical to this position will
be engagement with national and sub-national networks of people living and HIV
and key populations particularly in relation to attainment of the Political
Declaration targets.
The
focus can be modified depending on the context and needs of the country and the
presence or not of a human rights and gender advisor in the UCO. International
CMNA’s provide support from a sub-regional hub to more than one country.
