Types of chronic liver disease

According to Right Diagnosis Health Grades (2014),
there are about 16 types of chronic liver disease.
They include:

i.
Cirrhosis of the liver: Cirrhosis is a slowly
progressing disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue,
eventually preventing the liver from functioning properly (Olorunda, 2015).

 ii.
Alcoholic liver disease: Alcohol liver disease
is damage to the liver and its function due to alcohol abuse.
iii.
Chronic Hepatitis C: Chronic hepatitis c is
caused by the hepatitis c virus (HCV), as the virus enter the body it causes an
infection in the liver, scars the liver and prevent it from working normally.
iv.
Chronic Hepatitis B: Chronic hepatitis B is
caused by the hepatitis B virus that attacks and injures the liver. It can be
transmitted through direct contact with blood, unprotected sex, use of illegal
drugs and unsterilized or contaminated needles.
v.
Autoimmune Hepatitis: It is a chronic disease in
which the body’s immune system attacks the normal components or cells of the
liver and causes inflammation and liver damage.
vi.
Liver failure: Liver failure occurs when large
parts of the liver become damaged beyond repair and the liver is no longer able
to function.
vii.
Portal Hypertension: It is an increase in the
blood pressure within a system of vein called the portal venous system. Veins
coming from the stomach, intestine, spleen and pancreas merge into the portal
vein, which then branches into smaller vessels and travels through the liver.
if the vessels in the liver are blocked due to liver damage, blood cannot flow
properly through the liver.
viii.
Hemochromatosis: This is a disease that occurs
due to too much Iron that builds up in the body. When the body absorb more iron
than it is needed, it stores it in the body tissues especially the liver
thereby causing damage to the liver. It is also a hereditary disease.
ix.
Wilson’s Disease: It is a rare Inherited
disorder that causes too much copper to accumulate in your liver, brains and
other vital organs.
x.
Gaucher Disease: It is caused by the inability
of the body to breakdown or store fatty substances. This can cause fat to
accumulate around your vital organ such as the liver and causes damage to the
liver.
xi.
Liver Cancer: It is the abnormal (cancerous)
growth of the liver cells in the liver.
xii.
Hepatoma: It is a primary malignancy of the
liver and occurs predominantly in patient with underlying chronic liver disease
and cirrhosis.
xiii.
Primary Biliary Cirrhosis: It is a chronic
disease of the liver presume-ably autoimmune in nature that leads to progressive
cholestasis and often end-stage liver disease.
xiv.
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: It is a disease
of the bile duct that causes inflammation and obliterative fibrosis of bile
duct inside and or outside of the liver.
xv.
Sarcoidosis: It is a disease involving abnormal
collections of inflammatory cells that form lumps known as granulomas. It
usually begin in lungs, skin or lymph nodes that affect organs like the liver,
heart and brain.
