Purpose and Scope
Reporting to the Director of Planning and Development, the Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for implementing the Environmental Management Plan, including green building strategies / practices /
technologies and sustainability programs for a large scale, mixed use development of approximately 10 million square feet in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. This position will provide leadership through strategic planning, development, promotion, education and reporting in order to achieve effective long-term sustainability initiatives (reduction in the carbon footprint, decreasing operational costs and increasing stakeholder engagement) as outlined in the Environmental Management Plan.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be the single point of contact on all matters related to sustainability, and serve as the ‘Green Building’ subject matter expert for the development.
• Lead the implementation of strategies and initiatives identified in the Environmental Management Plan;
• Identify, research, develop and implement new sustainability practices;
• Work on multiple projects simultaneously with quick turn-around deadlines;
• Lead sustainable procurement for all goods and services;
• Coordinate all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation and renewable energy;
• Implement environmental policies and practices that comply with environmental legislation;
• Audit, analyze and report on environmental/sustainability performance to internal and external stakeholders and regulatory bodies;
• Promote and raise awareness of the impact of emerging issues and growth opportunities, including best practices and social responsibility;
• Manage media relations and coordinate sustainability plans with the senior management, contractors, internal staff, the broader community and other entities involved in the construction process;
• Negotiate environmental/sustainability service agreements and manage associated costs and revenues;
• Prepare and review LEED documentation;
• Interface with senior managers as well as technical staff and clients in local, national and international locations;
• Quarterly reporting and annual review of the Environmental Management Plan.
Qualifications
• A University degree in environmental science or a related discipline. Experience demonstrating success in the management and delivery of sustainability initiatives is essential;
• LEED AP Certification considered an asset;
• A minimum of three years of experience leading and managing projects, budgets and technical deliverables in the construction industry;
• Experience in resource conservation and sustainability practices;
• Experience in development and delivery of communications/marketing plans and organization and coordination of programs and events;
• Solid understanding of sustainability theory and its applications across multiple sectors, involving multiple stakeholders;
• Solid business acumen including budget management as well as the development and measurement of key performance indicators;
• Experience with LEED consulting or LEED evaluations including LEED accreditation.
• Advanced proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word and Power Point)
• Familiarity with blueprints and drafting software;
• Ability to closely track projects and tasks to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery of high-quality deliverables;
• An energetic, highly motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter with excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Strong organizational, time management and project management capabilities;
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision, exercising sound judgment with exceptional decision making skills.
