We are hiring two summer Community Outreach
Coordinators help engage communities on our INHALE Project in Toronto’s
downtown core.
2 positions:

Hours: 30
hours per week
Pay: $11.25 per hour
Start Date: June
13th or July 4th
Duration: 8 weeks

of June 13th and the other position is scheduled to start on July 4th. Please

Who We Are:
Since 1988, the Toronto Environmental
Alliance (TEA) has campaigned locally to find solutions to Toronto’s urban
environmental problems. A not-for-profit organization, TEA advocates on behalf
of all Torontonians for a green, healthy and equitable city. We rely on our
members to help us work with communities and we act as an environmental
watchdog at City Hall.
The Position:
We are hiring 2 summer students to help with
community outreach inSpadina-Fort York, including tabling at events, speaking
at schools and community organizations, connecting with apartments and
condominiums, helping to coordinate volunteers, and promoting TEA’s INHALE
Project: the Initiative for Healthy Air & Local Economies.
The INHALE Project is an innovative community
air monitoring initiative that will collect important information about the air
we breathe in Toronto’s downtown communities this summer. Using easy-to-use air
monitoring equipment, residents volunteer as Community Air Trackers and walk,
bike, stroll and roll along their streets gathering mappable data as they go.
With information on street level air quality, TEA’s INHALE Project hopes to
spark community conversations that can lead to clean air solutions.
Candidates must be prepared to work in the
community, engaging residents in Spadina-Fort York about in TEA’s vision of a
greener city for all.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Assist
    in the training and recruitment of residents as volunteers, helping to
    keep them engaged in Toronto Environmental Alliance’s (TEA) INHALE
    Project.
  • Train
    and coordinate interested volunteers from diverse communities to be
    ‘citizen scientists’ for the INHALE Project, using easy-to-use air
    monitoring equipment. They will train volunteers to collect air quality
    data in their neighbourhood and engage in solution oriented discussions
    about how we can clean our air by greening neighbourhoods, promoting
    active transportation, and reducing emissions.
  • Organize
    interested volunteers to attend events in Spadina-Fort Yorkthat promote
    the INHALE Project.
  • Attend
    annual summer festivals, events and local community celebrations in Spadina-Fort
    York.
  • Organize
    and assist in the development of outreach materials.
  • Develop
    outreach strategies that will successfully engage residents living in
    high-rise condominiums and apartments, which make up the majority of
    Spadina-Fort York’s constituency.
  • Seek
    out events and organizations that TEA can connect with in Spadina-Fort
    York.
  • Liaise
    with community members and organizations in Spadina-Fort York such as
    residents’ associations, condo boards, waterfront clubs, and businesses on
    behalf of TEA.
  • Organize
    events and public talks in Spadina-Fort York to engage more people on
    environmental issues such as air quality, active transportation, green
    infrastructure and climate change.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Candidates
    must meet the requirements of Canada Summer Jobs (see below)
  • Able
    to begin work as early as June 13th and no later than July 4th.
  • Able
    to work some evenings and weekends (this is needed to attend community
    events and meetings)
  • Excellent
    communication skills and organizational skills
  • Enthusiastic
    and outgoing with the confidence to engage the public
  • Ability
    to work well independently and as part of a team
  • A
    passion for environmental and social justice issues; knowledge of air
    quality issues an asset
  • Demonstrated
    experience coordinating volunteers and events
  • Additional
    spoken languages will be considered an asset.
This is a position funded by Canada Summer
Jobs and requires that the candidate be:
(a) between 15 and 30 years of age
(inclusive) at the start of employment;
(b) registered as a full-time student during
the preceding academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis
during the next academic year;
(c) a student in a post-secondary program;
(d) a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident,
or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration
and Refugee Protection Act; and
(e) legally entitled to work
