The Small Things is
a small but rapidly growing international nonprofit based outside of Arusha,
Tanzania, working with orphaned and vulnerable children and families. We are
entering our second year of on-the-ground operations in Tanzania, and looking
for someone to take on the role of day-to-day Program Manager and main contact
for all HR/Personnel issues. Ideally, they will be able to formalize and
strengthen the staff, office and other systems in place within the organization,
as well as get involved in the d

ay to day work of the programs. Applicants will
need to be comfortable managing teams while working in a dynamic, fairly
independent and self-motivated work environment, and dealing with the
challenges of working in the developing world. Must love kids!

The Program and
Personnel Director is primarily responsible for overseeing the daily operations
of our three programs; partnership with Nkoaranga Orphanage, Happy Family
Children’s Village, and Outreach. They take the lead with the Operations
Manager on staff management responsibilities for staff in those programs.
Fluent Swahili and HR/management experience required. Salary is $1,000 per
month plus housing, insurance, $500 flight allowance and $500 continuing education
allowance.

  • Supervision
    and Management
    • Work
      with Operations Manager and Executive Director to perform quarterly
      performance reviews of all staff under Program Manager’s jurisdiction.
    • Supervise,
      orient and mentor any new staff, and take the lead in hiring processes
      when necessary.
  • Orphanage,
    Pilot House, HFCV
    • Deal
      with day to day issue that arise at the orphanage, pilot house, or HFCV
      such as shortages of materials or maintenance issues.
    • Monitor
      stock at orphanage, pilot house, or HFCV and alert other staff to areas
      of particular need. Oversee monthly food purchases.
    • Collect
      and analyze shift supervisor reports and oversee bonuses or recognition
      for good work as well as issuing warnings for unacceptable work.
    • Communicate
      with caretaking staff and help deal with any issues that arise.
    • Arrange
      logistical tasks such as transport of children to other hospitals, field
      trips, etc.
    • Perform
      monthly reviews of compliance with procedures of the orphanage, pilot
      house, or HFCV, together with Child Welfare coordinator(s).
    • Present
      monthly reports to ED and board on all programs.
    • Manage
      container shipment and needs together with child welfare director.
  • Outreach
    Program
    • Oversee
      outreach purchases and manage outreach budget with Outreach Director
    • Deal
      with any emergencies that arise regarding Outreach Program
    • Receive
      reports on progress of Outreach Program and Social Enterprise from
      appropriate directors.

Required

  • A
    bachelor’s or master’s degree in International Development, Management,
    Human Resources, or relevant field.
  • At
    least one year of relevant work experience, managing a team of at least 3
    individuals.
  • Perfect
    written and spoken English
  • High
    level of Swahili or basic Swahili and commitment to improvement.
  • Excellent
    written communication skills
  • Experience
    living and working in the developing world.

Preferred

  • 2-3
    years of field experience
  • High
    level NGO management experience
  • Consulting
    or training background

Start date flexible,
aim for early 2015.
