Enabling Garden Assistant

In this full-time, direct career pathway summer student experience, the
Enabling Garden Assistant (EGA) provides essential support and reports to the
Enabling Garden Coordinator in the daily delivery of programs to people in the
community with special physical, development and emotional challenges.


The Enabling Garden is an award-winning, fully-accessible garden where people
with special needs can experience the joy of gardening in nature in a safe and
nurturing environment. Program participants range from children to older adults
and engage people of all abilities.

Responsibilities
• Assist to prepare for and deliver horticulture therapy programs, including
the use of specialized equipment and gardening tools for people with physical
challenges;
• Provide regular garden maintenance as directed e.g. watering, fertilizing,
weeding; transplanting and other tasks;
• Assist with program delivery, set-up, and clean-up on program day;
• Assist with marketing and administration tasks.

Skills and qualifications
• Some experience working with children and others with autism, development or
physical challenges, older adults etc.
• Some knowledge of and strong interest in plants and gardening;
• Some experience working with volunteers of diverse backgrounds and abilities;
• Empathy, respect, initiative, patience, a good listener, organized;
• Ability to take direction with willingness and flexibility;
• Comfortable working outdoors and physically able to perform light lifting and
bending;
• First Aid and safety training is an asset; further health and safety training
will be provided;
• Ability to work as part of a team and independently;
• Enrolled full-time in a college or university with emphasis in education,
occupational therapy, physical therapy, recreational therapy, nursing or
related field with plans to return to full-time studies the next academic year;
• A police check and vulnerable sector check is required.

Terms of employment

Contract start date is April
17, 2017
pending grant approval and end date is August 25. Time commitment
is 37.5 hours per week. Hourly wage is $12.50 per hour.
