Main Purpose & Function
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Sustainability, the Sustainability Monitoring & Reporting Planner develops, implements and continuously improves the City of Vancouver’s environmental sustainability monitoring and reporting processes, fosters accountability for plan implementation and outcomes, and provides performance data and trends to enable plan/resource adjustments. In addition, the Planner is expected to be familiar with a wide range of urban environmental sustainability issues (climate protection, green buildings, food, waste management, water conservation, sustainable transportation, etc) to enable them to contextualize City performance.

The Sustainability Monitoring and Reporting Planner is given direction on desired outcomes and is expected to develop and implement a detailed work program with a high degree of independence. In addition, the Planner must apply strong research, analysis, and strategic thinking skills to identify approaches and framing for communicating complex information and performance data in a way that is effective for the audience and medium (including management, public, external stakeholders, and Council). The incumbent will work closely with Corporate Communications to tell the story behind the data.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The incumbent will supervise the environmental sustainability data collection and entry function which will be performed by a variety of people across the organization. The incumbent will also supervise the environmental sustainability data verification function which will be performed by the department’s administrative assistant.

The incumbent will design, implement, and maintain end-to-end business processes and software systems to ensure the timely gathering, analysis, and reporting of a wide variety of environmental sustainability metrics in accordance with best practice methodologies; Identify gaps (and potential future gaps based on trends) between targeted and actual environmental performance, collaborate with target area managers to determine causes, and work through the Assistant Director, Sustainability to ensure remedies are developed in a timely manner; research and apply knowledge of international urban sustainability performance trends to propose strategies for framing of Vancouver’s performance to facilitate constructive outcomes given the City’s objectives, needs, opportunities, and limitations; develop reports and presentations for the public, City stakeholders, and Council on Vancouver’s environmental sustainability performance and achievements; and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
A university degree in business, environmental science, or related field plus 5-10 years professional experience, with at least 3 years in the field of social and environmental performance measurement and reporting, or and equivalent combination or education and experience. Experience navigating large bureaucracies with complex organizational structures is an asset.

Strong understanding of a wide variety of urban sustainability issues in both a local and international context; Advanced analytical skills; Advanced ability to clearly and effectively frame and communicate complex information and data to a wide variety of audiences; demonstrated ability to: Work independently; Lead and motivate staff; Influence without using formal power; Complete projects on time and on budget; Respond effectively in a variety of situations where there are multiple priorities using sound judgment; Advanced organizational and interpersonal skills.
