Stewardship and Horticultural Assistant Job Vacancy in Canada

Organization: The Riverwood Conservancy Location: Mississauga, Ontario

In this full-time summer position, the Stewardship and Horticultural Assistant (SHA) assists to steward natural areas throughout Riverwood and maintain public gardens primarily at the Chappell House. All work occurs at Mississauga’s Riverwood park.

The SHA provides support to the gardens, stewardship, and volunteer programs. The SHA schedules, supervises and leads secondary school students in stewardship and gardening activities to fulfill their 40-hour community service requirements.

Position responsibilities
• Assist with stewardship and environmental monitoring activities throughout Riverwood, including invasive plant removal and wetland stewarding
• Assist to maintain the Chappell House gardens and greenhouse, care for new plantings
• Guided by the Volunteer Coordinator, recruit secondary school students, prepare work schedules, mentor and lead student volunteers in Riverwood activities and regularly track student hours
• Support adult and senior volunteers as needed
• Monitor the public and education program trail systems, bird feeders and boxes
• Take responsibility for keeping the grounds tidy and litter-free throughout Riverwood
• Prepare a monthly activity report and a final report
• Assist with special events as needed and support other duties as assigned

Skills and qualifications
• Enrolled full-time in a college or university, with emphasis in ecology, biology, environmental studies, related discipline, or outdoor teaching certificate program; plans to return to full-time studies the next academic year
• Hands-on gardening and stewardship experience are an asset, as is the ability to identify some flora and fauna
• Excellent communication, organizational and multi-tasking skills
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Ability to safely work as part of a team and independently with minimum supervision
• Ability to work with and lead volunteers of diverse economic backgrounds, cultures, ages, and abilities including some special needs volunteers
• Valid class “G” drivers license
• Appreciation of the environment, gardens and out-of-doors work
• A valid Police check, or the ability to acquire one
• Some computer skills are an asset
• Training in emergency first aid and CPR is an asset, or training will be provided
• The hourly wage is $11.50 per hour; workweek is 37.5 hours per week; the week runs from Tuesday through Saturday; the position is funded pending a grant from Service Canada — Canada Summer Jobs 2011
