Position: LEAD GROWER – GREENHOUSE

LEAD GROWER – GREENHOUSE

St. Williams Nursery and Ecology Centre is Ontario’s largest native
plant wholesale nursery specializing in the production and supply of
native trees, shrubs, grasses, wildflowers,

aquatics and seed. We grow
more than 300 species of native plants in approximately 6 acres of
greenhouse, with additional field space.

We currently have an opening for an ambitious, competent individual as
the lead greenhouse grower in our southern Ontario nursery. Working
with a team, the lead grower will coordinate all growing activities of
plug propagation. This position reports directly to the General
Manager.

The lead grower will ensure that all operations and activities are
carried out in a safe and efficient manner while advising area leads
on process and protocol to ensure best management practises are
followed. The lead grower will be required to keep a running journal
of all activities and species growth requirements as the season
progresses to ensure overall knowledge development and accurate record
keeping with the goal of ultimately being able to assist with future
planning.

The lead growers’ responsibilities will include the following, but are
not limited to:
• Ensuring overall safety of team members in greenhouse area
• Working closely with management team, scientists and fellow growers
to ensure processes are followed and quality standards are attained
• Streamlining processes; improving efficiencies
• Ensuring all operations are carried out in a timely and efficient manner
• Assisting in developing stringent quality control measures and procedures
• Conducting regular review of procedures and quality control
• Assisting in training of team members, setting expectations and
leading by example
• Motivating and assisting in creating mutual trust and respect
between team members
• Assisting in production planning and forecasting
• Advising senior management and other growers in a timely manner on
seedling issues, such as disease and insect problems, erratic
germination, non-germination or any additional concerns with seedling
growth, and thereafter collecting information and offering corrective
measures
• Scouting for pests and diseases
• Making chemical and biological application decisions
• Through initial guidance from the Grower Advisor and management,
monitoring climate, irrigation, fertilization and IPM requirements as
needed
• Assisting with inventory control
• Maintain a clean greenhouse environment

Job requirements:
• Degree in Horticulture and/or 2-5 years growing experience
• Argus environmental system experience a plus
• Strong communication skills
• Must be a team player
• Computer skills in Excel and Word
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment
• Ability to manage time effectively
• Keeping up with industry education and latest technology
• Must be able to work long days and weekends in season
• Gain Pesticide Safety License within 3 months of employment
