The The West End Food Co-op’s Sorauren Market Assistant supports all aspects of operating and promoting the Sorauren Farmers’ Market. The assistant takes a lead role in set up, take down and promotion of the market. The position includes welcoming vendors and visitors to the market, facilitating logistics on market day, postering and promotions in the community, volunteer management and coordination. The assistant supports the set up and tabling at the info table, as well as set-up and operations during the market. The assistant will be familiar with the management of the market as well, including public health issues, vendor fee structure, vendor policies and applications.
Key Responsibilities:
– Farmers’ market logistics
– Set up of market each Monday
– Delegate to volunteers and support as needed
– Communication with vendors & ensuring vendors set up appropriately
– Set up programming space and liaise with programming organizer
– Coordinate set-up and operations of special events and fundraisers
– Support the distribution of donated food from the market to local organizations
– Tear down and clean up of market
Administration and Organization:
– Be familiar with the vendors, vendor policies, applications, and park rules
– Support manager in ensuring vendors are adhering to rules and regulations
– Communicate with City of Toronto Staff as needed
– Coordination and communication with other market staff and volunteers
– Provide management as needed (especially in absence of Market Manager)
– Keep market supplies and storage organized and clean
– Provide volunteer coordination and management as needed
– Work with Manager to organize vendor and volunteer meetings, work parties, and celebrations
Outreach and Promotion:
– Welcome vendors and visitors to the market
– Provide customer service at the info. table and elsewhere as needed
– Network with other organizations, businesses and individuals in the community
– Postering and flyering to promote the market
– Work with Market Manager to organize special events, celebrations and fundraisers
Qualifications:
– Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills
– Good people skills in different contexts
– Exceptional organizational skills
– Experience working with volunteers
– Ability to work independently and as part of a team
– Knowledge on local food issues, farmers’ markets and cooperatives
– Experience with promotion, marketing, and graphic design an asset
– Familiarity with the West End Toronto community an asset
Job details:
The position begins at ten hours/week at $15/hour. The position will run from May 16 to October 31.
The assistant must be available on Mondays between 1pm and 8pm. Physical labour, heavy lifting, and working outdoors are all part of the job. The assistant is encouraged to attend market committee meetings and will be welcome to participate in other co-op activities.
