BACKGROUND:
Save
the Children’s strategic ambition identifies 3 breakthroughs – ensuring that
every child survives, learns and is protected – that we will catalyse between
now and 2030. Reading is the cornerstone of learning and academic success. If
children leave primary school with a strong foundation of literacy

skills, they
will be ready for a lifetime of reading and learning. This will provide them
with the knowledge and inspiration they need to further improve their economic
competitiveness, health, civic engagement and quality of life.

Mureke
Dusome (which means ‘Let’s Read!’ in Kinyarwanda) is a 4-year USAID-funded
project that aims to foster partnerships between schools and the broader
community in a bid to improve literacy outcomes for children in primary grades
1-3. The project is being implemented by Save the Children in all 30 districts
of the country from January 2016 to January 2020. It also aims to foster strong
partnerships between schools, parents and communities to create a supportive
environment for children to read. In total, Mureke Dusome will benefit children
in over 2,500 primary school communities throughout Rwanda.
The
project began its operations in Gicumbi and Burera districts in the first year
of implementation in 2016, before being scaled up in 10 other districts in 2017
and the final 18 districts in 2018.
The
program goals are three-fold:
  1. Strengthen
the capacity of school leadership to promote school-community partnerships
    and improve student literacy.
  2. Increase
effective community and parental involvement to improve literacy skills
through community engagement and social and behavior change communication.
  3. Foster
a culture of reading through civil society platforms and strengthening the
supply and demand of the children’s book industry.
