This is a unique
opportunity to gain experience working in a remote Aboriginal community on Mornington
Island. Located in the lower Gulf of Carpentaria in far north Queensland,
Mornington Island is the traditional country of the Lardil people. Traditional
culture is very important to the people and you will learn a lot in this
opportunity about the culture, the importance of dance, art and the land. Our
Gulf vision is for community ownership of the programs, and you

will be
influential in mentoring and developing the locally employed team of Educators.
We need you to provide operation support to the centre and help it reach
educational goals for the young children on the Island.

Where you come in:
In this full-time, permanent position (fixed-term opportunities will also be
considered), you will provide leadership to the early childhood staff at the
Kirdi Mayarr Early Learning Centre and assisting at the Ngakulwen Nyerrwe
Children and Family Centre on Mornington Island. Our centre is a 39 place
centre for children ranging from 0 to 5 years old, with 3 rooms operational.
Our purpose is to ensure as many children from our community have access to a
culturally appropriate play based early childhood education while supporting
our local people to gain their qualifications in early childhood education and
strengthening the work force on the island. The opening hours are 7.30 to 5.30
and shift times are negotiable, to allow you to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle.
Enjoy magic beach sunsets, fishing on the clear emerald seas or bush walks.
Local grocery, variety and butcher shops supply, grocery items, fresh fruit
& vegetables and fresh meat.

You will also run a
local kindy and act up in the role of the Director in their absence. Based on
Mornington Island, you will need to be resilient to and respectful to fit into
the traditional culture of the community. You will be part of our Kirdi Mayarr
Early Learning Team and report to the Director.

You will make an
impact by:

  • Inspiring,
    motivating and challenging educators in a culturally appropriate way
  • Developing
    training and development plans for educators
  • Planning
    and delivering teaching and learning programs
  • Working
    with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and
    communities within a culturally appropriate framework

up into a senior role. You have a passion for working in remote areas and
building capacity in Aboriginal communities. Your cultural sensitivity allows
you to build strong relationships with people in a respectful way and enables
you to engage with the community to develop lasting partnerships. You are
excited by a challenge and willing to go above and beyond.

This role requires:

  • Diploma
    of Early Childhood, Children’s Services or equivalent
  • Experience
    in early childhood centre based care and education service
  • An
    awareness of and commitment to the National Regulations, Early Years
    Learning Framework (EYLF), National Quality Standards (NQS)
  • Experience
    in mentoring staff
