The Salt Spring Centre of Yoga, now in its 30th year, is the longest-running spiritual retreat centre on the west coast and is known for its delicious vegetarian cuisine and productive organic farm.
We are seeking a Farm Manager to oversee cultivation of about 4 acres of vegetable and berry production. Most of the produce is used on site in the Centre’s commercial kitchen for guests, program participants and residents. Excess food may also be distributed to local stores, a farmers’ market and a local food bank.
In keeping with the volunteer nature of almost all work at the Centre, the position offers room and board, access to all community classes and, because of its managerial aspects, a stipend of $400/month.
The Farm Manager is part of the three-person Agricultural Committee which guides farm policy and practices. The Centre Farm voluntarily relinquished its organic certification a year ago but still adheres to all organic practices. The Farm Manager will supervise four full-time farm workers over the season running from March through November.
The successful applicant will have good farming experience, a strong sense of organisation and planning, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage workers. Applicants should also have a strong desire to experience life in a working community based on yoga philosophy and practice.
