Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic individual to serve as Project Coordinator for the Sunshine Coast Regional Biodiversity Strategy Project. The goal of the project is to increase the capacity of our community to undertake sound stewardship of biodiversity and ensure that the Sunshine Coast maintains a connected, biologically diverse network of habitats, healthy, resilient ecosystems and ecosystem services.

Responsibilities shall include:
1) Biodiversity Assessment — Identifying and amalgamating existing information and data from all sources, including mapping, inventories and assessments of sensitive ecosystems and wildlife populations, and working with GIS and data analysis specialists to assess the current status of biodiversity, evaluate threats, and identify priorities for conservation and restoration.
2) Biodiversity Summit — Organizing a 3-day Biodiversity Summit to bring together local stakeholders, scientists, and land management experts to exchange knowledge and identify issues, values, priorities, common objectives, coordinated strategies and effective measures to conserve, enhance and monitor biodiversity in the region.
3) Biodiversity Strategy — Using information from the Biodiversity Summit and Biodiversity Assessment to create a draft Sunshine Coast Regional Biodiversity Strategy Framework.
4) Public Outreach — Together with other team members, helping to organize and carry out diverse public outreach activities to educate, encourage and provide capacity for Sunshine Coast community members to assist with biodiversity conservation.

Qualifications:
• Undergraduate or graduate degree in Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Forestry, Environmental Sciences, Resource Management or related field
• Demonstrated research and analytical skills, including an ability to quickly obtain, absorb, evaluate, and communicate new information
• Demonstrated time management and organization skills, and proven ability to lead and manage projects
• Experience writing, evaluating, and presenting clear, concise written reports
• Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, and ability to coordinate, collaborate and build consensus on challenging issues.
• Experience planning and coordinating meetings, conferences or public events
• Passion for environmental conservation and commitment to sustainability; past experience working in the fields of environmental advocacy or outreach, etc.
• Flexible and resourceful with strong work ethic and initiative
• Knowledgeable about relevant topics such as biodiversity, ecosystem services, wildlife habitats, etc.
• Expertise in GIS a plus

Duration of Employment: Nine months beginning June or July 2011 (exact start date negotiable)

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Employer: The project is based on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, northwest of Vancouver, BC. It coordinated by the non-profit, charitable Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society (http://www.lagoonsociety.com). The Society’s goal is to promote respect for nature, encourage sustainability, and facilitate community participation in environmental stewardship activities; to assist in monitoring and improving the ecological health of the region; and to offer facilities for educational programs, research, events and studies. The Society runs the Iris Griffith Centre — an educational facility and model green building designed to enable visitors to explore and appreciate the natural wonders of the Sunshine Coast.
