Full-Time Position
Royal Botanical Gardens is a 1,100 hectare biodiversity sanctuary that
includes gardens, wetlands, remnant prairie, Carolinian forest and
Niagara Escarpment lands. As Canada’s plant biodiversity hot spot, our
mission is to promote public understanding of the relationship between
the plant world, society and the environment. Through our educational
programs and products, we seek to
encourage environmental stewardship
by providing meaningful and diverse learning experiences that connect
people of all ages with the plant world. Our goal is to help people
understand the crucial role that plants play in sustaining and
enhancing our lives and the environment.
We’re looking for a dynamic interpreter with a proven record of
developing both personal and non-personal programming and media that
engages a broad public. As part of the Education team, the
Interpretation Officer is responsible for informal learning
opportunities that contribute to our mission, including development
and implementation of interpretive signage and displays, audio and
live tours, exhibit and event programming, workshops and
demonstrations, publications, etc.
Key Responsibilities
• To implement interpretive programming through planning &
development, coordination and evaluation of activities for garden
animation and live interpretation, travelling exhibitions,
tours/podcasting and other activities
• To research, write, edit and produce interpretive signage and materials
• To work closely and collaboratively with other RBG staff and
departments in the planning and delivery of programs, installation of
interpretive materials, coordination of exhibit programs and
logistics, execution of special events, etc.
• To coordinate implementation of an integrated Interpretive Plan for
RBG’s gardens and nature sanctuaries, for both personal and
non-personal interpretation
• To recruit, train and supervise seasonal and interpretive
staff/interns/volunteers
• To develop budgets and execute projects on time and to budget
• To plan and manage interpretive projects from start to finish
• Other duties as assigned
Requirements
• University graduate in life or environmental sciences, horticulture,
education, museum studies or other field related to the RBG mandate
• Formal certification and/or training in interpretation an asset
• Extensive experience in program planning, delivery and evaluation
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills
• High level of organization and administration skills
• Ability to manage many concurrent priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Appropriate content knowledge in horticulture & natural history
• Team leadership and supervisory skills
• Ability to work effectively in a MS Office environment
• A valid Class G Driver’s License and own transportation
• Some evening and weekend time will be required with compensatory
time off in lieu
• A Police Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening and a clear
Statement of Driving Record will be required of the successful
candidate, at the candidate’s expense
