Fall Migration Banding Intern needed for a fall migration banding station in Metchosin, British Columbia, Canada (near Victoria) operated by Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO), http://rpbo.org .

The position is approximately 15 weeks, 6 days/week (~90 days, 8 — 10 hours/day) of field work with a possibility of part-time non-field work (computer and other tasks) for an additional 6 months.

A Bachelor degree or diploma is required preferably in biology, ecology, zoology. Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada (i.e. Canadian citizen, resident, etc.). Attention to detail and record-keeping skills desired. Experience with birds is not necessary; however interest in bird species and biology/ecology is desired.

Training will include operation of a banding station such as, mist-netting, safe extraction and proper handling, and efficient banding and processing of a variety of bird species (e.g. identify, age, and sex) captured, primarily, but not limited to, passerines. Primary duties are bird capture and banding and data entry working under the supervision of the Bander-in-Charge and with volunteers.

Housing may be provided to an out of town intern. Personal vehicle is required. Applicants are responsible for travel expenses.

Wage is dependent upon experience ($10 – $12/hour) and pending funding.
