This job posting is for the 2012 York Region Water for Tomorrow Lawn and Garden Consultations and
Outdoor Water Use Program, which seeks to educate residents, through a variety of methods including a free landscape consultation service, seminars and public event attendance, about the benefits of water efficient gardening and sustainable landscaping practices. Residents call to book a free landscape visit to their property. During the visit, our Lawn and Garden Advisors give residents suggestions including design options that incorporate water efficient and native plants, suggesting alternative landscape designs that reduce lawn cover and adopting water efficient lawn care techniques.
We offer comprehensive training on sustainable landscaping, native plants, xeriscaping, residential irrigation issues, lawn care, water efficient vegetable growing and general landscape design principles. You will get exposure to a variety of landscapes across the region and the opportunity to learn as you work. You will also receive training on Community-based Social Marketing which is increasingly being incorporated into municipal based education and outreach programs. The work is predominantly independent.
Responsibilities of the Landscape Consultants include:
– Conduct landscape consultations for York Region residents outlining the principles of sustainable landscaping, xeriscaping, and hydro zoning.
– Address resident’s lawn and garden questions and concerns, while providing plant and design recommendations.
– When applicable, provide advice on increasing efficiency of residential irrigation systems.
– Engage residents in adopting sustainable landscaping practices on their properties.
– Maintain timing with scheduled appointments.
– Provide assistance on appointment bookings.
– Staff information booths at local community events throughout the summer.
– Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS
– MUST have knowledge of gardening techniques, landscaping basics and plant species. Applicants without solid horticultural knowledge need not apply.
– Must be an outgoing and friendly individual with an interest in meeting and talking to a variety of people daily.
– Must be willing to work independently with minimal supervision.
– Knowledge of basic sustainable gardening principles is an asset.
– Must be willing to work outdoors in all kinds of weather and have daily access to a computer and e-mail.
– Must have a reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance.
– Must have experience with MS Word and MS Excel and have daily access to the internet.
HOURS & REMUNERATION
The term of employment will run for approximately 16 weeks commencing April 16th 2012 and will be with Resource Management Strategies Inc. who manages the programs for York Region. The position offers an hourly rate of $16.00 (plus business mileage @ $.43/km). Please clearly outline your relevant skills to this posting in your cover letter.
