Teacher job-share description

The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) is looking for a qualified teacher to job-share and assist to teach and further develop Education Naturally, our elementary school, curriculum-linked outdoor education program at Riverwood. This job-share position is integral to the TRC transition plan and can lead to full-time employment.

Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the Education Program Director Consultant (EPDC) on all education program matters, the successful candidate will be responsible to deliver programs to students from grades 1 to 8, as well as JK and K levels. You develop teaching material that supports the Ontario Curriculum (focusing on Science, Social Science (1-6) and Geography (7-8)). These programs consist of pre-visit discussions with the teacher and post-visit lessons to support the on-site lessons. A willingness and ability to present field science programs to secondary classes would be an asset.

You will be mentored by our current Teacher who teaches 80% of the time (four days per week) and you will teach 20% of the time (one day per week). As a job-shared position, you will also be available for the equivalent of one additional day per month for the purpose of being trained by our Teacher and prepare for program delivery. Note that for most months this works out to five days per month.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of natural history, botany and horticulture and an understanding of science methodology and appropriate teaching pedagogy. The candidate will possess demonstrable teaching skills, a strong work ethic and be comfortable in the out-of-doors.

Position primary responsibilities:
• Assist to develop and deliver TRC education programs that reflect current Ontario Provincial Ministry of Education Guidelines for Grades 1-8, and also teach JK and K levels
• Assist with the pre-visit and post visit components
• Supervise and train volunteers supporting delivery of the school programs
• Promote the education program to schools including school visitations and/or hosting teacher groups and when needed attend relevant workshops and conferences
• Assist in the identification of teaching resources needed to deliver programs
• Develop and produce suitable materials for students to work with on the property
• Evaluate educational materials produced and revise as needed
• Assist to maintain and order the equipment necessary for the school program
• Update and maintain the participation databases in conjunction with the Office Manager

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
• A current teaching certificate
• Experience as an outdoor education teacher or similar field
• A degree in science (preference biology/ecology/environmental science) or similar
• Knowledge of plants and horticulture
• Knowledge of field research techniques
• A willingness and the ability to present field science programs to secondary classes
• Knowledge of the out-of-doors, stewardship, natural history and ecology
• Experience working with young people in the targeted age groups
• A working knowledge of the current science curriculum for grades 1 to 12, with an emphasis on grades 1-8
• A valid police check or can acquire one
• Willingness to work with and train volunteers
• Computer skills including the Office suite of applications
• The ability to speak publicly and to work with a diverse public
• Be in good health
• Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and time management skills
• A willingness to make a long term commitment to the TRC Education Program
• A valid G driver’s license

The salary for this job-shared position is $8,500.
