Secondary school field science

The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) is looking for a qualified teacher to lead, further develop and deliver our secondary school, curriculum-linked outdoor field science program at Riverwood.

Reporting to the Executive Director and the Education Program Director/Consultant (EPDC) on all education program matters, the Teacher will develop and lead the delivery of an outdoor field science program to secondary school students that emphasizes ecological literacy to levels 9 and 10, but also grades 11 and 12, including special needs students and alternative programs. The instructor will also assist when necessary in the delivery of the primary/junior Education Naturally field science program (Grades 1 to 8).

The Teacher works with and is supported by a team consisting of the EPDC and TRC Education Committee, with representatives from our program partners, the Peel District School Board, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, University of Toronto Mississauga and Credit Valley Conservation.

The Teacher monitors and evaluates all program elements.

The Teacher trains and supervises volunteers from diverse backgrounds to support the secondary school program. The Teacher liaises with the Volunteer Coordinator on all volunteer matters.

Position primary responsibilities
• Develop the field science program and review the current program and make changes as required
• Lead the delivery of on-site programs to secondary school students with a focus on levels 9 and 10 but also including 11 and 12 programs, and alternative programs including at-risk students and Dual Credits programs
• Support team-building and leadership skills development
• Assist in and/or develop new programs that reflect the opportunities to build the program and ensure its success (i.e. developing an evening astronomy program for secondary schools, responding to special requests from teachers)
• Provide pre-visit planning to the teacher to support the on-site class program, and assist to organize and analyze the collected field science data
• Supervise, train and direct volunteers supporting the education program, including students from York University
• Have a willingness and ability to teach education programs that reflect current Ontario Provincial Ministry of Education Guidelines to Grades 1-8
• Monitor and evaluate the program in conjunction with EPDC, Volunteer Coordinator and the Education Committee
• Be able to work the occasional evening and provide leadership in the development of evening programs for guides and scouts
• Maintain the field equipment, order items as needed for program delivery, take an annual inventory of equipment and program supplies
• Identify teaching materials needed to deliver programs; develop and produce materials for use during class and as hand-outs; evaluate materials and revise as needed
• Build and train resource teachers to deliver programs in your absence
• Provide program information to teachers considering a booking, and provide the supporting Office Manager with information to respond to teacher inquiries
• Prepare reports for staff and committees
• Be a leader of the Education Committee
• Write a column for Samara, the TRC quarterly newsletter

Qualifications
• A certified teacher
• Experience and expertise at teaching outdoor education at both the secondary and elementary level
• Experience working with special needs students
• An understanding of natural history, botany, horticulture, stewardship, environmental science, ecology and geography with an emphasis on field science
• Working knowledge of the Boards of Education and Ministry of Education curriculum for grades 9-12 secondary science/geography curriculum
• Working knowledge of the Boards of Education and Ministry of Education curriculum for grades 1-8 elementary science curriculum
• Experience working with volunteers
• Some experience as a field researcher and familiarity with field equipment
• The ability to think in holistic terms
• Experience as a curriculum writer
• An ability to speak publicly and to work with the public
• Computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite of applications
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and very strong organizational, time management and multi-tasking capacity
• Valid Police check or the ability to acquire one
• Emergency first aid and CPR training
• Driver’s license and vehicle

The salary range for this full-time position is $35,000 to $37,500.
